We find out that we're actually staying in the little town of San Pablo del Lago near the lake of the same name. There are many San Pablo's in Ecuador and their names are differentiated in some way. Apparently, all the cities have a full religious name, like San Francisco de Quito.

Since we hadn't had an internet connection for 4 days we were just trusting the "South America on a Budget" guidebook. It delivered. The place was an old mansion in the historic part of town and while it had paper thin walls, it had nice open spaces and a killer Italian restaurant attached to it where we ate frequently.

Cuenca was nice - very pretty. A city of 300k at 8,200', it is semi-famous as the place where 3,000 gringo's have chosen ...

... persuaded. We walked from the carpark to the snow line at 5100m. A short climb, but at that height it was increasingly difficult to walk and we both started to feel a bit light-headed, having to pause every 5-10 steps to catch our breath. The views from the top were worth the struggle and the way down was much easier, speeding down the side of the volcano on mountain bikes.
