(Author's Note: Although this is dated in chronological order I've had to backtrack a bit since Internet access in Key Largo was been difficult, was having too much fun to check in, and too tired at the end to keep up.)

... find many of the beaches are private for hotel residents only! There were afew that were public but not where I was. Headed to the most southern point of the USA and got a mandatory photo next to it, lots of tourists flocking around a barrel, but i had made it my trip of the East coast was complete! 06/10/2009 - Woke up in the morning to a lovely free breakfast by the pool of the hotel with relaxing music playing in the background, beautiful. Jim headed up to the harbour after breakfast to try and find a spare place on a boat to go fishing, but no joy. The boats that were going out were all booked and the next trips wouldn't be until Thursday when we would be in Chicago! Jim was gutted he didn't get the chance to go deep sea fishing ...

... we were soooo gutted. We never to got find out what it was on the end of the line, but speaking to Fred the next morning, he reckoned it was probably a barracuda or maybe a black-tip shark (!) as they are known to come in to shore at night.

... was good, service not so good. The bill came to $39, they self added a tip to make it $46, I have them $60 and the miserable waitress enquired as to whether I required change from my 60 dollars...hmmmmm! I would say you could spend you dollars elsewhere in the Keys to get a nicer meal out.

Tomorrow we head off to Naples for an overnight stop as its a good 5 hour trip (with the destination being Clearwater), we plan to start early and get some road behind us.

... a very detailed tale of the history, people and landmarks of Key West. At our rest stop on the tour, we bought ourselves some treats: me a waffle cone of key lime sherbet, a couple varities of fudge and a chocolate cone for John. The tour finished back at Mallory Square and we started off on our own. The area of Old Town is teaming with souvenir and quaint specialty shops so it's fun to just walk around and window shop. In the youth hotel in Miami Beach I met a Swiss girl, two German guys and a German girl. All nice persons, a little bit young (around 20/22) and lost so far away from home. ... get some. The Martello was built during the Civil war to thwart any southern attacks on the mainland. Key West was a thriving metropolis...at one time being the largest city in the Union. I read about the history of Key West...industry....shipbuilding....spon ges....Military connection...Cuban connection...etc. When I walked in the lady at the front desk asked me if I knew about Robert from the Ghost Tours TV show. I had heard of the show in Charleston and Savannah but didn't know ...

... we couldn't disagree on that score. As with many places we have visited, our stay in Key West went very quickly and so that we could savour as much as possible on our last day, we headed to South and Smathers Beaches to soak up a some sun. That was of course after us poor travellers ransacked the all-you-can-eat breakfast... oh yeah keep piling it on!!! Snorkeling proved worthwhile with a few decent encounters with some fish of various colours ...
