29th April 2008: Edinburgh - Inverness We took the 1.36pm train from Edinburgh to Inverness. Along the 3.5-hour journey, we experienced a dramatic change of weather -the very sunny and blue sky of Edinburgh gradually changed to a grey cloudy one as we headed northbound. At some parts of our journey, we could even see snow-capped mountains. Beautiful landscapes of mountains, rivers and lakes began to emerge as our journey progressed steadily and signboards of station stops in dual language bec...
Drumnadrochit, Scotland, United Kingdom xuanargi30th April 2008: Around Highlands (North) We woke up and had our wonderfully cooked Scottish breakfast served by Caroline at our own appointed time - 10am. The view from her breakfast room was fantastic - we could see Loch Ness and her beautiful farm while enjoying our breakfast at the cost breakfast room. 1st leg : Drumnadrochit - Tomich - Cannich Ploda Falls: We started our adventurous day right after breakfast by driving towards Cannich but just before that, we took a left turn to enter a ...
Inverness, Scotland, United Kingdom xuanargi... br>Some other info Ross gave us.
- Scotish flag is based on a vision that St Andrew had while fighting the British a white cross shining against a blue sky.
- golf is actually illegal in Scotland, William the IV declared it illegal as it stopped the young men practising their archery, the law has never been changed.. lol
Back in Edinburgh, food and sleep, early start in the morning!!!!! oh no..
... worthwhile (and hopefully worth the money, i'll see when I work out how much I've spent). I obviously won't be uploading the 4000 photo's I took but anyone is welcome to see them, they need only ask; and set aside around 5 hrs to go through them. This is Mike's log.......signing out.
Kingussie, Scotland, United Kingdom mikedz... Skye Boat Song was written.
Charles returned to France a broken man and died an alcoholic in 1788.
I have never been to a battlefield before and I can only imagine the horror of armies facing up then storming towards each other in mortal combat. I have always been on the side of the underdog and even though I have no great affiliation with the Jacobite cause, I felt a huge well of sympathy for the brave Scots whose ...
Today's section sees a route up over the hill into Fort Augustus and then onto the Caledonian Canal through a series of locks to reach Loch Oich.
About four miles in I meet Ian, who is parked up off the path and is frantically making sandwiches to feed what looks like a small army. He's the support team for a group of 14 former Coldstream Guards who are walking the route to ...
... to Invermoriston. I'm sure it was worth it really!
Invermoriston sits on the junction of the main turn off for the Isle of Skye, and the road between Inverness and Fort William. It's clearly got a bit of an issue on the food front as it's got plenty of good places to stay (and my B&B is no exception) but only one place (The Glenmoriston Arms Hotel) that serves food in the evenings! I have to go ...
Today sees the start of the Great Glen Way that leads from Inverness to Fort William along the Great Glen Fault. I've not read great things about today's section to Drumnadrochit - boring seems to be the verdict!
Oh, and I have a confession. The tent, the stove and other related items have stayed in Inverness with a friend. I could manage with them but the weight was really pressing on my feet and I'm not getting on brilliantly with camping. I'm ...
Spent yesterday walking through Scottish terrain. Unfortunately the weather wasn't sunny but it wasn't raining so since coming to the UK I have come to know that as 'a good day'. I have to admit it, but any day that doesn't rain I consider a good day of weather too. How quickly standards change..
Time has flown by here in Scotland. Back down to London tomorrow and off to India Wednesday. This is quite possibly the most boring blog entry ever, but the photos should at least be ok
... spotted one running around the hall like it owned the place. Later, at dinner, there were 3 or 4 different dogs sitting with their people, generally very well behaved. We went to the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre and to Urquhart Castle. The evidence seems pretty unfavorable for an actual monster, but you can see how people might imagine stuff in that lake.
