... was really nice of them and we realised how far it was when we had to walk back to the train station as there is no taxis in Raton.

We dumped our bags and headed to a bar just down the road for lunch. Free poured drinks for $6 we enjoyed our afternoon, good food too. Our server Eden was such a sweetheart we got her to get some toast and gave her vegemite, she loved it we told her we would be back in a few days after our little road trip. ... in the Civil War and the Indian Wars. At one time it was the largest fort west of the Mississippi. With the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s the Santa Fe Trail lots its importance and so did the fort along with it. It was eventually abandoned in 1891 after 40 years of operation.

... the wind was just at the top of the mountain but I was wrong. It was quite windy as I hiked the Boca Trail. I was expecting interpretive signs but there were none. You get to see some interesting lava formations but it was disappointing compared to what I've seen at some other lava flows, such as Craters of the Moon National Monument.

After hiking all the trails I headed back to my hotel.

I headed for the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument Visitor Center in Pilar, NM today. Rio Grande del Norte is one of the newest national monuments, having just been created in March 2013. Most national monuments are managed by the National Park Service but this is one of the 19 managed either entirely or partially by the Bureau of Land Management.

We see this in the small towns, how they were built very quickly on a short term prosperity and now they simply provide bed and food for people passing through. Those travellers bring no income, wealth or permanence ...
