As the title indicates, it wasn't tremendous last week. Being in Nelson, we'd had a thought of trying to head to the hills for more tramping, but a look at the forecast showed that rain was on the way for most of the next week. Checking the details, it seemed like the east coast would escape most of the wet weather, so we decided to head to Kaikoura for a few days and see what we could see. It was a beautiful drive down ...

... 14 miles wide at its narrowest and is considered one of the most dangerous waters in the world. Thank goodness I only found that out after we arrived in Picton.

We headed down the east coast the next morning and drove through Blenheim. Just by chance I saw a sign to the Omaka Aviation Heritage centre so we had to make a detour. On approaching the centre another sign advertised Omaka Classic Cars, a double whammy for Peter and another car museum for ...

... on offer but in the end the water is too choppy to do anything. We're staying at The Lazy Shag (great name), as soon as I get there I trip over a light on the driveway, take a spectacular fall and end up ripping my jeans and cutting my knee, hands and fingers, not a great start! We all decided to go for a walk along the coastline to see the seals and get to know each other better. A few of us girls went to the pub for steak and wine in the evening ...

    Whale watching!

... floored it with news there was a sperm whale nearby already on the surface for air. We hit huge rolling waves sending the boat soaring then crashing. Felt a bit queesy which I never do. Within minutes we were there and there he was. A huge male sperm whale called Kiaki, 18 metres long and 40 tonnes in weight. We could see the top part of him including the blowhole and dorsal fin. The shear size of it was ridiculous, as big as our boat and twice as heavy! He blew ...
