Pompeii and Vesuvius

... area of Sorrento, the region seems much poorer and dirtier than our prior destinations. Driving to Pompeii one sees small stray dogs darting in and out of traffic, garbage on the side of the road, and run-down buildings. On the other hand this area has some of the friendliest people that we have met so far. The food, drinks and landscape are all so vibrant that we would certainly come back again (but for longer next time).

Spent the day walking throughout the historic parts of Sorrento. The antiquity of this city is hard to grasp coming from America where a building 300 years old is a relic. Here there are buildings dating to the IX century.

Tourism is the main industry here and the narrow, windy ...

... in a beautiful deep blue colour. Looking toward the entrance you saw blue, looking away you saw black. There might be seven or eight boats in the cavern at one time. The boatmen would sing “Volare” or some such. Passengers would “ooh” and “aah.” Flashbulbs would fire. And then the ride was over. Our boatman made it clear that you were not getting off his vessel until you had forked over a €5 tip.
