... Armed with brochures, we drive to Alet-les-Bains to see the medieval township and its abbey - it's winter and nothing is open, not even the church (and it's after 2pm). We wander around - lots of empty buildings in varying states of decay. It is a thermal spa and must be busy in Summer, but there's only us and some cats today. I suggest that we travel east to Lagrasse, about an hour away - what was I thinking - the further along the way we travel ...

... Eiffel tower is only 324m to the top of its antennae) - it is 2.46m long, with 7 supports below the carriageway and 7 pylons holding up the carriageway - it has been called an exceptional work of art. See the pics and judge for yourself. ... and a spoon - she spoons some cassoulet and makes me taste, and then Peter. At lunchtime, we decide to go back there, but when we arrive, it's closed (it is 2.30), she remembers us from the morning and invites us in - she is only too willing to feed us. We order the cassoulet and un pichet of pays d'oc blanc. For the uninitiated, cassoulet is a peasant-style, stew dish of white legumes (bigger than cannellini beans), confit of duck (leg), confit of porc, and a saucisse - ...

... into far horizons.
At 3.30 pm, we hit Carcassonne, call Isabelle and meet her at the flat - it is on the other side of the river, 500 metres from the Porte Narbonnaise, of la cite. We are on the first floor, a gauche, of a very, uninteresting, dirty grey building in a dead end street, just around the corner from the main road. Definitely, nit much to look at from the outside, but the front door opens onto a light, bright living area - freshly painted ...
