Devil's Tower Redeux: Summit at Night, Sans Aliens

... came to astutely queried him, "Did you climb up?" "Yeah," he responded, eyeing their 9 year old wearing an "I drove (to) the golden spike" T-shirt, "and I brought you this from the top," handing the wide-eyed boy a rock from his pocket. He walked off down the trail, leaving the family flabbergasted and amazed, picked up another stone from beside the paved walkway, and waited to make eye contact with the next gaggle of Wisconsinites. ---0--- Well, our trek ...

... the 70's. He traveled west to "check out the tower" and became himself a permanent fixture of Devil's Tower-as perennial as the columns and heat, though a far sight more colorful. An irreverent "lost boy" who strayed from Neverland far enough to discover the Tower, but not so far removed that he ever grew up, or lost sight of his dreams. It was a treat to climb the tower in the shadow of one giant and belayed by another, but it was a feat to climb it at all. A definitive crack ...

... if that's your poison. But beyond that, it is a center of friendship, generosity and peace, drawing in climbers and families with an almost gravitational pull, while at the same time radiating out an amazing, rejuvenating energy--and believe me, it's quite a feat for anything to be rejuvenating in July's 95 degree desert heat. At the center of it all, well, slightly to the side, really, is climbing old-timer and ...

The male was displaying to several femailes. He looked like a Peacock that had been crossed witha Pitbull Terrier. It was great to watch. There was also lots of Prairie Dogs (Gophers) by the roadside. Theye are lovely ...

... was going out and had to do some weird thing to get it started. Oh joy! That was yesterday. Today we are on a mission to pack in some sites. We left the campground in Harden, MT and went to Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn. The display and area were very powerful. Personally, I enjoyed seeing a place that celebrated a Native American victory ...

... clear sky and spectacular views of the mountains, it's going to be pretty hard to beat. Being in there early also meant that the wild things were doing their business before the ehat struck - I saw numerous Pronghorn antelope things, Elk, something that looked like a Coyote but which I rather hoped was a wolf, and my piece-de-resistance, an Eagle. That was extremely cool. The Wyoming attitude to safety is not necessarily what you'd expect from litigation strewn America. Still very ...

... bison jam"-a herd of moms and babies that were blocking the road. It was a good-sized group, and you definitely don't mess with them when they're crossing the road! The babies are red, rather than the dark brown of the adults, and look a lot like cow calves. A couple of the bison walked right next to my open car window. Fortunately, they didn't expect any handouts. The road continued on into the Wind Cave National Park, where we saw two more herds of bison-one of which was very ...

Mount Rushmore

... we reached the visitors center, we walked (sometimes up and down steep inclines) on a 1.3-mile trail around the base of the monument. The tower itself is 865-feet tall, and we were able to see 2 groups of climbers on the tower, with one person already at the top. After careful consideration, we decided to stay at ground level. We drove back to South Dakota and still had about half of the afternoon left so we went to check out Thunder Head underground falls. This is ...
