Some thoughts on the way home
... a pittance of water for the year. Arthur's Pass and the road from Christchurch to Greymouth also fit into this group and the day hike to the top of Avalanche Peak was one of our best experiences though it is not for anyone with a fear of heights. The lost city
... diversion we found the
car park in the the park and walked into the city... about
2sq miles of the city centre is still cordoned off... behind 6ft wire fences
mostly with buildings in what seemed to be three states..either just
a pile of rubble where they had been safely demolished ready to
rebuild..or still cracked and falling down..or just empty shops, left
untouched since the fateful night with warning signs on the door "do
not enter"..one example was a clothes shop, ...
Lake tekapo
... sure we understood what the significance of the dog was but it was a nice statue i suppose. That evening we did a bit of tramping (trekking to all you non kiwis) up to mount john. It was all uphill but the view from the top was stunning. Lake tekapo is known for its clear night skies and has a famous observatory where they do star gazing tours. Apparently the residence of lake tekapo are trying to make the skies over the town a unesco world ...
Celebration in Christhurch & wedding in Wellington
... the city but its also haunting to see so many areas which previously were shops, including a bookshop which is now just a single bookcase standing in a big open space, which are now advertsing space to park you car.
I wandered round the botanic gardens, checked out the museum and a local farmers market. I even went for a jog round the North Hagley Park where I went for New Years Eve to hear some local bands play and welcomed the new year to the sound ...
