    ... the tundra, and the top of Mt. McKinley emerges far in the distance, above the tops of shorter mountains in the foreground, appearing as if a cloud due to its persistent coating of snow, and glaciers. I'm instantly emotional; I'm home. This sentiment only grows over the next several hours, as we drive ever-closer toward that mountain, which the native Athabascan call Denali, "the great one".

    ... Gavin...long train ride, but fun now at hotel in Denali. Jack and I are enjoying this special time with the grandchildren and I know they will remember it for a long time to come.     ... down a bus and continuing up the mountain. Later in the trip we saw a grizzly mum with to cubs only about 100metres down the hill from where the bus was. I hopped off the bus and sat on a hill watching their antics for a couple of hours, at one point there bears came a-little to close and I had to relocate to a different hill.     ... sounds worrisome to me, but on the shuttle there is the option to get OFF and walk or hike and catch the next shuttle that passes. Not sure what one does if a bear comes along while you're on the roadside waiting, but we're obviously not the first to do this. After dinner at the 49th State Brewery, John showed us his slide show of Denali. Now we want to come back in winter and go in for a few days with sled dogs. Night, all. Tomorrow we're back to 5AM ...

It has quite an open couryard with a stage for outdoor concerts (and may have been gearing up for one tonight) but we ate at one of their long "bar-like" tables (with huge rocks holding it up). Larry had a buffalo meatloaf that was excellent but would have fed nearly all of us. Rox tried "Elk lasagna" which had a good but different flavor but more due to the sauce than any elk in the dish. ...
