The aim today was to drive to the Green Mountains in Vermont - the **** sat nav we've hired likes to take us on long routes so today's drive was 6 hours long! This included driving the length of Manhattan in rush hour in heavy rain and getting lost in a car park. Luckily ...

... adjacent to the noisy, busy freeway, secured one night in a serviced pull through, turned on the air conditioners (it was warm), put on the Giants game and relaxed with some fresh caprese from our larder.

Perhaps we would have remained overnight up in the Berkshires had we found an open campsite. The Walmart in North Adams doesn't allow overnights so we moved on.

Long day but colors of fall were out in force. Now we are in Pennsylvania.

It was fascinating to watch Americans on a Saturday night out, drinking cocktails while watching college football and Major League baseball on two tvs at the same time. We ate well and didn't allow the noise levels (worse than a school canteen) to disrupt our meal.
An early start tomorrow as we move to Boston, on Columbus Day too!

... we saw, what we believe was, an Amish family picking up a few supplies which they could not provide for themselves on their farm. They certainly do live a simple but very healthy lifestyle.

Today we continued on our journey and would stay overnight at Farmington Maine. There were several beautiful towns and rivers on the route and we probably should have stopped and taken a few ...

... The road winds through forested hills and the Fall foliage was just beginning to show its mettle. There are scenic lookouts at various spots and we sampled the Hairpin Turn and climbed to Whitcomb Summit (in the car, I might add). The scenery was stunning and we enjoyed a brief picnic in the warm sun. Then back into North Adams before climbing up to the highest point in Massachusets, Mt Greylock (almost 4000 ft up), with views ...
