... next day we spent half the time in Fez and then drove back to Tangier where we would finish our tour. We went to the famous Medina in Fez which has approximately 9,500 streets; needless to say, we stayed close to our tour guide. We saw the Medersa (Koran School), a silver smith shop, a rug factory, a tapestry factory, the second largest tannery in the world, a pharmacy, and an old Mosque. The most interesting one we visited was the tannery. The smell was intense and not a good one ...

Fes, Morocco jmatczak... his palace given their great creative abilities, and in return they provided him with a beautiful gate as a gift. We wandered down the narrow alleyways, reviewing the cotton that had been freshly shorn as well as listening to how the majority of wealth was stored in the form of skilled crafted blankets that were woven by the women for use in both Summer & Winter. The next stop was a cemetery ...
Fes, Morocco mvenkat007... is the first time the guides have seen each other in awhile so there is lots of chatting in Arabic and stories and messages from across the desert being exchanged. A fire is lit in the middle of the room and a small enamel teapot is put on the flame in prepartion for the usual mint tea. Jamel chops vegetables and salts a pot of water. Aziz gets out all the parts of his hookah from a storage bag and puts it together so he can share smoke with his friends. We are told the ...
M'Hamid, Morocco inoursuitcase... you can't go in but you can see the ablutions area and one of the prayer halls from a gate), the leather tanneries - a large open air space with hundreds of vats full of dye and pigeon dung, a ceramic workshop employing scores of people. We are there during the Fes Festival of Sacred Music and we attend a few concerts - the best was Fadhel Jaziri, a Brotherhood (Hamadcha) of Sufis from Tunisia at the Bab (gate) el Makina - a older male and and a young female singer (father and ...
Fes, Morocco everardt... s really worth seeing. This time, the central pool is of circle shape. Unfortunately, student's chambers are off limits for tourists. We still have some 2.5 hours before we have to leave the city, so let's do a free-stroll programme;). One of our random targets is Fondouk Nejjarine, a wood museum [not really worth seeing] with a nice view from the its roof. Also, Karolina finally succeeds in buying a belly-dance suit for her friend, congrats;)! By the way, this was the only shop in ...
Fes, Morocco mys... panorama photo. I suspect they may fear the camera as a soul-stealing "evil eye", a traditional belief that prevails in many parts of the Mediterranean world. Although the belief is not Islamic in origin, in Morocco and other modern countries "The Evil Eye" is warded off by the Hand of Fatima, small metal hands which represent protection by Mohammed's daughter Fatima and adorn everything from houses to automobiles to horse-drawn carts to necklaces and other jewelry.

I just went to some random place to eat something cheap and then took a taxi to the medina - which Fès is so famous for. The city has the world's largest medina and it's so big and complicated that it's near impossible to find your own way through it. The taxi recommended me a guide, probably a friend of his, and I thought, **** it. I'll just hire a guide to get the most out of ...
