Wherever I travel and learn about the diffiulties endured by the peoples of those lands it seems I am struck by the resiliency of the people. Sarajavo and Dubrovnik are classic examples of that. These cities that sustained so much damage in the Balkan conflict are almost completely rebuilt and the people are rebuilding their lives as well.

... wine bar and make our way across the Riva to our dinner spot, on the Republic Square across from the Marmontova, a highly developed street reminiscent of Italy or Portugal. Dinner is obviously seafood, quite delicious and aside from a bit of a rain scare, a good time. Following our dinner, take a stroll through the Riva and the Old Town, which is not as popping as the previous two evenings, it is Sunday after all, before heading back and taking an early leave.
Today we left about 8am to visit the old city in Split. On the way it was very hot and one poor lady on our bus, which had no ventilation, looked like she was about to faint. She had to get off the bus and recuperate on the footpath with her husband. The old city reminded us of Venice, a maze of lanes and courtyards, cobbled streets and boutiquey shops and market stalls. ... had seen it on Getaway about 3 months ago and knew I had to see it in real life. Unfortunately about 5kms out the traffic comes to a standstill. We have no idea why but we have no choice but to sit and wait.
Eventually we move a bit and we understand why the traffic has stopped. We have picked the one day of the year they have decided to run the Plitvice marathon and they have closed one of the 2 lanes to traffic. It takes us about an hour to drive ...
