    ... Croatia an increasingly popular weekend and extended stay vacation destination. Most of the vestiges of the Soviet era and the regional fighting of the 1990s has all but disappeared. In our convoluted ride around greater Split, the only edifice that was readily identifiable from the Soviet Era was a cement plant conspicuously built in a wetland and proximate to the commercial harbor.     Driving from the lakes to Split was a breeze. The main challenge was trying to get the small hire car up to the national speed limit of 130km/hr. Man these highways are good. We must have driven through about 12 dual tunnels, varying in length from 2km to 80 meters. Clearly the Croatians believe in going through mountains, not over them. They probably never had a "Thomas Baines". The trip was fantastic, nonetheless.
