... shipping magnate, Sir William Burrell. While in Glasgow and with the Commonwealth games in full swing, we popped in to watch the men's hockey semi-finals between South Africa and Canada. South Africa won and will meet Australia in the finals later today. We could have stayed on in the pouring rain and watched Australia play and win the women's final against England, but chose to watch it on TV! ...

... absolutely beautiful day. We couldn't have asked for better weather. And the course has spectacular views as many holes sit along the coastline. My first round of course on a links course and I am happy to say I only lost 4 balls! Got back to Troon for a quick bite to eat, catch up on the blog and will be off to bed right away as we have an early start ...

... mainland Scotland,
The Mull of Galloway. This lighthouse was built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson and
stands 99 metres above sea level. The tower was closed so I walked around the
outside, down to the fog horn. The RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of
Birds) have 2 camera on the cliff face here, recording the many seabirds nesting
in the area. A true balancing act for some!

Today dawned,
quite disappointingly, with rain. Quite miserable in fact. A change of plans
was required.

I drove from
Portpatrick, north into the town of Stranraer, a terminal for ferries to
Belfast. The Stranraer Museum is housed in the historic Old Town Hall, built in
1776. A small but fascinating display of the shire’s past, including one of Scotland’s
oldest ploughs, a look at Stranraer’s Polar explorers, ...

The wind has been howling all night and the rain lashing. We decide to have a lie in and a slow morning. Although it's overcast it feels warm and the outlook is good. We drive into Stranraer as we need to find a launderette. We finally find it and deposit it in a large machine then go off for a look around Stranraer. I am in need of some new socks, I have loads at home but didn't pack enough. Just like I packed far too many skirts and blouses, I simply don't need them! We ...

Stayed four days while healing from strained and bruised muscles. Was made to feel at home. Great breakfasts, quiet nights, across the street from the Ryan Leisure Center swimming pool.
