After bragging about out marvelous weather a huge storm system hit us around 7am. At 9am I decided to stay an extra night because of the storm. The thunder and lightning lasted until 12 noon while the heavy rain did not lighten up until about 2pm. Of course I have had a migraine all day and spent a good part of ...
... the tarmac road then almost immediately turn back onto the dirt road again! This time I took a corner a little too fast and the washboads were bouncing me off the road! With a little patience I got to the apex of the corner then gunned it! and came out OK. The final 25 kms of the journey was via 4 lane highway sigh... Checked into the motel then next door for Mexican food. My lips have stopped burning now from that almost raw Jalapeno peppers - Yum!
... from a farmer's yard, we stopped. We found some fresh steelhead at Costco, (of course, it was enough for several meals.) and bought it for dinner. John cooked it on our little grill and the whole meal was delicious. After dinner, we walked down to Edna Lake at the Nisswa Resort to watch the sunset. It is still warm in the evenings in the Midwest, which makes them quite pleasant.
We figured out a route to get to Cape ...
... day today. Drove straight through northern Wisconsin into Minnesota. We're at Crosby City Park, Minnesota for tonight. Looking forward to seeing the National Parks by early next week.
Have a safe and happy Labor Day Weekend all! Bristol will be rolling up the sidewalks this weekend!
Happy 3rd birthday to Samantha on the 31st!
This old town was a bit dirty and not very cared for. There was very kind citizens and they will help you with anything you need! Great places to eat and there of course was fast food... Teenagers practically run the place. All and all Little falls, Minnesota a great place to visit with the Charles Lindbergh house there and all the buildings from the 1800 and 1900 this town is not one I will ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Cragun's Golf Resort and Conference Center Brainerd
1970's or possibly 1980's decor. Linoleum floors and double beds. Fairly clean. Eight of us stayed in a two bedroom house for two nights. While we had a great time I thought that it was a spendy weekend to pay over $300.00 per person to share a double bed with another person and share the room with two other people also sleeping in a double bed. A facial, pedicure, and massage were part of the price but overall I felt it was way overpriced for what we received. Most of the girls complained too about having to wash their faces at a sink with the staff person watching to make sure you did not miss cleaning any spot on your face after the facial. I thought the massage was very good and the pedicure was pretty good.
We spent the weekend at Cragun's using their winter funfest package. We didn't expect 4 or 5 star accomodations so we weren't disappointed at all. We stayed in a hill side cabin and felt it was quite clean and comfortable. I wasn't impressed with the hallways in the motel area. They are long and dark and showing signs of definite wear and tear. Our cabin was nice though. And warm for this time of year. We had a dinner and breakfast as part of the package. The food was just buffet style but had a little of something for everyone. It was enough to fill our stomachs. The activities they offer in the package were fun for the kids. The wild animal show was very entertaining for its small size. We would return again in the winter for something to do. My kids loved the dog sled ride. It's not a fantastic resort but it is a nice winter break.
Worst spa ever!!
The so-called "spa" does not deserve the title. I read the previous review and was prompted to write because my friend and I had an equally disappointing experience.....possibly worse. We each had a massage, a pedicure, and a facial...............for a total of six services --all overpriced and all unprofessional. On the plus side, the resort is in a lovely part of the country. It attracts many returning guests. The resort staff is very friendly and helpful. BUT the spa is the worst I have ever seen.
Great family resort, hated the spa!
We stayed in the Shoreline Suites which was very nice and had good use of space. They could use some updating. Very 80's decor. Our kids loved the activities, bonfires and camp. However, my sister and I went to the spa and were dismayed at how we were treated and what kind of amateur service we received. The ladies who worked there were more interested in talking to each other and goofing around then paying attention to us. They seemed very immature and not very experienced. The facial was basically a mask left on for 10 minutes and then a massage. We had to wash our face at the sink ourselves when we were done. It was very pricey for this terrible service. So, go to Craguns for the kids; but drive somewhere else to enjoy a spa day.
After reading some of the other reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect when we arrived at Cragun's. We found ourselves suprised then at the very nice time we had there. Our room was huge, and though the fireplace was tiny, we thought the room was clean and pleasant. In other hotels I have stayed in, we awake as soon as anyone starts talking in the hallway. But we were both thrilled at how quiet the place was. Maybe it was just a quiet group, but we didn't hear anything, and we loved it.
I would have to say this was one of the worst places I've ever stayed at. The hotel is down right ugly and overpriced. The rooms are very outdated along with the pool area. It takes forever to get to your room - it is a maze of long long hallways and stairwells to get you to anywhere you might want to go. When you actually find the pool/game area it is very dissappointing.
Yikes! We were warned not to go! But the kid's activities enticed us so we tried the place. All we wanted was a short getaway... but it was the worst place we have ever stayed! We asked for a poolside room, and it was vile! After being shocked at how outdated the room was, I decided to pull the blankets back and check the sheets...and there was a 'hair' on the white sheets! So we asked for another room and it was just as gross. The bathroom ceiling was coming down in junks, the carpet was so dirty I had to lay towels down on the floor to walk on! YUK! PLUS!!!! It stunk! It was supposedly a nonsmoking room but it reeked of stale smoke. It didn't help that all the patrons and staff who smoke, stood outside near a stairway which funneled the smoke throughout the resort.
Wonderful Family Place
I read the other reviews and felt a need to tell about my experience.
My family had the best vacation at Cragun's. All the staff were very friendly and went out of there way to help us. The kids programs were excellent. The food was great. I felt the welcome was great - not at all Nazi like. My family can't wait to come back next year. I definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting a great time.
I have travelled to the Brainerd area on business four times within the last few years, as well as to many locations all over the midwest and east coast, and I can definitely state that Cragun's has to be one of the most overpriced, overrated destinations I have ever travelled to. Sure they have many activities and it is a family destination, but everything has a 'camp' feel to it. The facility is aging, the staff are not overly enthusiastic and the food is not good at all. You get the feeling that they are awfully proud of their 'resort'(ie, price) but much of that pride is misplaced. Overall, I avoid the place.
If you like rules and regulations
Good food, nice setting, confusing and poorly located road signs, a rules, rules, rules. When you get to your room, a recorded phone message will bark even more rules at you. Actually most of the rules are for everyone's well being, but the tone is kind of like a Nazi POW camp. Some rooms are pretty far from the lobby and pool. Management seems just a little too uptight to really call this place friendly.
