Last country!

... cramped spaces and bags on laps, as well as a welcome glut of snack and toilet stops.

So we are now in Durban in another lovely guest house - where we plan to take in the sights, eat bunny chow (hollowed out loaves of bread filled with stew) and drink several martinis in the local bar's happy hour. Oh, and we are also picking up a car (before the martinis!) which we can't wait for!

A&Lx

Walking around the City

... I am yet to see the other way around. I am just trying to get an understanding as to how post-Apartheid South Africa actually works. When you ask locals most of them contradict themselves so it is really difficult to know exactly what is going on.

From my perspective, Apartheid might be long gone but it seems that the disparities are still very big and that the whites still have most of the wealth of the country. I keep thinking how can a ...

Hippie happy in Durban

... Earth and are therefore busy building their house underground. (see pic)
I enjoyed the big fire under the starry sky, the drum circle, and also took part in a 'sweat lodge'. 20 people sitting in a dark hut covered of blankets, where water poured over hot stones is creating a hammam effect, and where everyone creates spontaneous sounds and songs, to celebrate the 4 elements. Unique I told you!

Durban girl? Why not ...

Umshado wesiZulu (A Zulu wedding)

... was a whole ceremony where individuals of the groom's family were called to lay on a mat on the ground and were covered with a blanket. Then they stood up and sang something, which everyone responded to. They then took their gifts and went off. All of the gifts were given in this way, and then the bride and groom cut the cake and posed for pictures just like we do it in the states. We were devastated to find out that the ...

Busy Times...New Experiences

... be so fortunate to be placed in such loving, supportive, and stable families. Unfortunately, the three oldest children, who have been in our care for much longer, are old enough to understand what's happening and have been asking where their mommy and daddy's are. I truly hope their adoptive mommy and daddy's come forward soon. I recently learned that Americans are unable to adopt South African children as President ...

A Place of My Own

... getting a bad storm right now, and I just turned around and noticed that all of Durban below me, including the harbor and downtown, is without power. It's strange to see complete darkness. I still have power at the moment. The lights just started to come back up as my brother called me from Ohio. Unfortunately, about one minute into our conversation, the phone went dead. He tried to call me back several times now, but the phone is dead when I pick it ...

Beach, Bluebottles and Sunburn

... the lifeguards were constantly blowing their whistles to get peoples attention to move them back into the designated swimming area. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that we got quite badly sunburnt. It seems we left our brains at home today and forgot that the African sun and a cool breeze is a dangerous combination. Not something we will do again anytime soon!

Meeting a racist in Durban

... she replied "Shame! Shame! Shame!", that lovely South African expression of sympathy. She later saw me shivering outside the combi, eating my breakfast of four bananas, beckoned to me, and offered me a place in her friend's minibus, as it had a heater in it. I declined appreciatively, wanting to keep my window seat in my vehicle, but was cheered up by this display of African caring hospitality. I was only the third passenger in our combi, and it took around two hours for the ...

WORDS AND IMAGES: Dreams made to Fit

Without arrogance, he shows off his neatly pressed, grey trousers and models them for me, urging me to take photographs. "I made these. I can create this myself," he says, beaming a huge smile. A decade ago, Gabriel started working at a local company that produced uniforms. After nine years, the company "fell down"-in other words, closed its doors for good. While seeking ...
