... taking off his wing mirrors. To cap it all, he lost 2nd gear, so was taking his eyes off the road. So our necks were aching quite a bit, going from 3rd gear to 1st gear, nearly launching us through the windscreen. We shot out of the taxi, and then to the place that sold the tickets for the ensuing boat trip. The ticket office had beer for sale, but wasn't any way strong enough, after the terrifting trip down the hill. The boat trip was quite relaxing ...

St Lucia

Well here I am again, finally made it to an internet cafe. Been a crazy week, we have covered some serious distance. Altogether I think we have driven about 2700kms so far and more to go yet! After leaving our shark experience e headed down the coast and have seen some very pretty beaches, Wilderness was the favourite. So beautiful and ************e around. Our hostel had a terrace overlooking the sea where we watched the sun go down with a bottle of wine, lovely. We went to ...

... roof and an outdoor bathroom (nothing like being shat on by birds and lizards while you shower!) The mozzy situation is hectic but after using half a can of Deet and burning four or five coils we are winning the battle, though my chowed legs suggest otherwise. On our first night we got well oiled in the bar and met some cool people. Having a bar tab is very dangerous and there were a few sore heads in the morning. First day we went to the beach and ...

... in one of the hostel guides we had picked up on our travels and tried a different hostel (that had also been recommended by some people in Coffee Shack). We got an answer, but it sounded like the phone had been answered by mistake and there were only distant voices audible. A re-try got an engaged tone. We decided to do some shopping for supplies in a nearby shop and then try again. This time success and we were on our way to the Mantis and Moon hostel! The Mantis ...

Head case

... Later on, back at the house, I had a chance to examine my head more closely. I had a spot of bloody scraped skin about two inches around , on which the hair had all been removed except for about 1/8" of fuzz. It looked like it had been shaved with a #2 clipper. All around the semi-bald patch rest of my hair was my inch or two long. The abrasion looked like the patch of dead grass where the blow-up swimming pool used to be. Pretty ugly.

... rather than staying at a backpackers. The only time we had company was when a couple of Swiss girls, Lara and Nicole came to stay for a night. They were really cool and invited us to meet up with them in their hometown in Berne when we get to Europe. Kev is a chef on a luxury 160ft boat that sails the world, and is due back on board in the Mediterranean Sea in a few weeks. He cooked some amazing dishes that we were invited to help ourselves to. ... take photos of the "kralls" and "rondavalls" in which many of these folk live as part of their shantytowns or townships; however, as the day went on, I began to feel awkward at the thought of doing that. After all, the poverty, living conditions and unemployment in this country is pretty awful and I really did not want to be a "looky-loo" at other people's lives. I would not like them to come and take photos or my house so why would I take photos of ...

Now We Are REALLY In Africa

... Nobody sitting in the courtyard was interested, and the guy started verbally abusing people who tried to keep up their original conversations. He went on for 45 minutes as, one by one, people left. We were almost the last to walk out (we had to be somewhere, actually) and declined to contribute, despite the onslaught of profanities. Add this all up and we decided to move to the municipal campsite for our second night. (Incidentally, we sighted crazy poetry guy on the street near ...

... the spectactular sunrise before packing into the landrover. We were a small group of 5 which made it possible to all sit in the front quite comfortably. Besides Mike and Ayanda, our guides, we joked about it being a bit of a girls trip with only myself, Judith and Cirrie. We rambled along the N2 (the main road along the south coast) making our first stop at the Kei River Canyon. Here we learned about some of the ...
