Happy Anniversary on Ice

... for the day was Nathan, who by coincidence had been our guide yesterday on the mill tour. Nathan fitted us with cramp-ons and checked to see that we had everything needed: hat, gloves, sunglasses, lunch, rain pants and jacket, and enough layers to keep warm. The glacier is about 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area. We stowed the cramp-ons in our day packs and proceeded with three others on the 2 mile ...

Anchorage to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

... by highway in the entire state. Nearby at Glacier Park they offer glacier trekking and ice climbing.

Glennallen is a major highway crossroads. The Glenn Highway continues as the Tok Cutoff, northeast to Tok. The Ric******* Highway goes south to Valdez (southern terminus of the pipeline), and north to Delta Junction and Fairbanks. We turned south towards Valdez, but traveled just 15 miles to Copper Center. This is the headquarters ...

Valdez to Chitina

... Hwy to Chitina. On the way, saw two foxes in a field--with the binoculars; really beautiful amber color with big fluffy whitish tails.

Before getting to Chitina, there were awesome views of the Copper River Valley and three small pretty lakes right next to the road: Three-Mile Lake, Two-Mile, and (you guessed it) One ...

North Pole, Richardson highway

... a normal one. We visited the North Pole shop, bought souvenirs, took pictures, just what normal tourists would do. We decided to stay at copper center lodge, the only lodging place in town, well, not actually a town, only a few houses, no more than twenty in sight. The room is small since the lodge is old.

Copper Center

... 10am hike on the glacier but the drive from Denali and then on the Glenn Highway was beautiful and then we couldn't find a hotel along the Gleen Highway, so we just kept driving all the way down to Copper Center. We ended up changing our hike to the 3pm hike to allow ourselves time to rest up (after a 8.5 hr drive from Denali)and explore some of the area around Wrangell-St Elias NP.

McCarthy and Kennecott Copper Mine

... farther by backpacking or flying in. Otherwise you can take a van five miles farther on to the Kennecott Copper Mine, which operated until 1938. When the copper mine was in operation the towns of McCarthy and Chitina were busy towns. Today there is little in either place and the mine town is deserted except for the tourists who come to visit. The towns were accessed by a railroad. Now that rail bed is the road. We arrived at ...

Kenny Lake

As par for the course, we found clearing skies and no rain as we closed the trailer and said "Good-bye" to Valdez. The nice weather did allow us to get some better pictures along the Ric******* Highway, which has some very nice scenery. Our drive was just about 100 miles so we were set up in the campground early, got some lunch and set off to visit the little town of Chitina. This little town is at ...

Drive to Copper Center

Copper Center This is definately not a drive for one day from Anchorage and back so I was glad I decided to take two days to go there and back. This drive is definately more Into The Wild and you dont see a soul (car) for long long times. It al started of with lots of detours in Anchorage due to road constructions and they place one sign that says take a left road ...

Road Trip

Today we drove all day long. We started out heading toward Glenallen, but made quite a few stops before and after. We really didn't have much fun in Glenallen itself but the rest of the trip was fun. Along the way we did some geocaching, of course, and drove through Copper River, where we got some good tips from the owner of the Copper River Roadhouse. We then drove through Glenallen (all 3 blocks of it) but we weren't impressed so we turned around and headed to Chitina ...

Turn Left at Glenallen

... ABOVE the Arctic Circle. The area below is surprisingly lush and beautiful, miles and miles of unobstructed Nature. You can drive past glaciers as though they were just another roadside attraction, and see the occasional moose or bear making poo-poo along the roadway. Does a bear **** in the woods? In fact the area around Anchorage is really more ...
