9 Meadow Lane Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa, 2004
Finally after 44 days of over-landing, we arrived in Cape Town, South Africa. Here marked the beginning of the end. The tour was over and we yet again had to say goodbye to some amazing friends. Luckily for us, many of the group elected to stay in Cape Town for a couple of days and we did some touring together. For me that really paid tribute to what a great group we had. After spending so many days in such close quarters, we still were not sick of ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa caralyn... for a few American girls to do, but Max grew up with these people, and he assured us that it's totally cool. He's 36 (those kind of spread-out age and mixed ethnicity relationships are very common here), very mature, a world-renown choreographer (traditional African dance and many other types), and very willing to share about the social issues he experienced growing up here.
We went to the beach, all the way through Hout Bay and around the ...
... in Cape Town (669 meters above sea level), as this night was full moon so were thousands of other, more prepared people. Not really knowing what was in store, I began the 1 hour ascent in my sandals. No water, no flashlight and no idea. It sounds very scary but we just headed up the long path with no fear. The first part of the climb had a path marked out with thousands of people trekking the same way it was an easy walk around the base and half way up the grassy ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa cherelle.f... culture is simply different, I really have to be careful to who I talk to when I'm out and how I talk to them. Local guys will often readily assume that if you dance with them or maintain a friendly conversation with them at a bar that you want to go home with them. It has been frustrating for me because I want to get to know locals but I don't want to give the wrong impression. It is easier at all student parties though. On Friday after the ...
Cape Town, South Africa johannaksf... I just pretended I didn't' know him though. On our first full day here we slept in and mom and dad went to go get groceries. We did homework and other useless stuff in the meantime. Then we explored the nearby beach and saw some seals swimming and in the distance some whales. The second day was pretty exciting; on our way to see penguins a bunch of whales were right up in the bay so we watched them for a while. They are Southern Right Whales ...
Cape Town, South Africa samndoug... tour.
We were on the first bus which filled, then drove to park across from the maximum security prison. Our guide, Yusef, said he would wait for the other busses to pass. In the meantime, if we told him what country we were from, he would tell us how our country had an impact on Robben Island. We had people on board our bus from South Africa, the UK, Germany, Holland, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Australia, Canada, and the US ...
... with a straw sleeping mat as another thankyou present. 12.30am back to bed for hopefully at least a few hours sleep. Woke early at 3am and got ready to go. We hoped the car would not be on 'Uganda' time today. We requested the car for 3.50am.....it arrived at 4.10am. Finally on our way, the drive to Entebbe Airport seemed to take forever. We arrived at 6.20am and ran straight to check-in, concerned that check-in would close one hour to departure. Successfully checked ...
Cape Town, South Africa alandem09The alarm bell shatters a wonderful nights sleep. It's 5.20 am. I'm on holiday, is this really happening? I don't really have to get out of bed do I? Thankfully, it's the big day. The day we meet sharks. Face to face. Ok, there's a cage but that takes the romance out of it. So, imagine the disappointment when Mr Shark Cage Operator South Africa doesn't pick us up at the agreed time. Or half an hour later. Or even at all. That will now apparently happen Sunday. Will they turn ...
Cape Town, South Africa petewaters... don't use that system, T-Mobile does though). It takes the credit you have purchased and transforms it into internet that you can use for your computer. When done you just put it back in you phone and it's your phone. Neat system, it's fast, and actually not that expensive if you want something fast. You don't pay for the time you are online but instead pay for the amount of data you download (that means no itunes for me which is sooo sad). So there are things that are neat but ...
Cape Town, South Africa thtravels... place, to donate it to Locks of Love. I allowed myself to be sad about it, but I didn't allow myself to let it change my mind. So I went up and I did it. While Lauren got fish guts poured on her, Katie chopped off my hair with a pair of scissors. I went straight up to the salon to fix it because kitchen scissors just don't do the job well enough and had the lady even it out. Mom, I think you'll be excited to know that, after years of you telling me how ...
