Final Thoughts

... everyone to travel there at least once in their lives. What makes Africa truly special, is the local people. I’ve seen and met so many people who really having nothing in their lives and are genuinely happy. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t like a few more material objects in their lives. But by nothing I mean tattered clothing, minimal food and dirty water, a mud hut for a home, and no health care. All they have in their lives is ...

Arrived in South Africa

... a bit watched tv (once of the three channels that they got) and then it was off to bed.

The next day we had to be up at 4 and out of the house by 5 to catch our Grey Hound Bus to Jeffrey's bay. We drove the garden routed to get there...but still the trip SUCKED!! It was some sort of milk run where we stopped over a dozen times to drop people off and pick new people up. It took us about 13 hours to finally get to Jeffrey's Bay, but we made it!

... were so blessed by us that Vicky asked us to graffiti our names on her living room wall which didn’t have any other writing on it. We were hesitant to graffiti her wall, but did it at her request.

We also got pretty close to the pastor and his family this week. They even had us over for dinner one night, and we would often finish our days with a little rest and some juice at the pastor’s house. It was an amazing week!

And so it begins........

... our time drinking the night away with our short term neighbours. We spent the next couple of days taking in the Cape Town attractions, including; a trip out to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcera ted for 18 years , and the Cape of Good Hope, the most South-Western point of Africa where the Atlantic & Indian oceans meet, and for this reason we got the chance ...

... of Danes who had been on my flight arrived and wanted to go to the same hostel. Leaving the airport took a while as the taxi shuttle driver was operating some sort of parking scam whereby he pretended that his parking ticket did not work when inserted into the ticket barrier. We eventually arrived at the hostel in the pouring rain and the driver collected 50 Rand from each of the Danes, I handed over 50, but he simply looked at it and told me that I had to pay 150. I asked ...

Africa via Wembley

There's nothing like starting a trip with a fourteen and a half hour delay. This is a new record for me in delays, beating the Kebab Airlines Kos record by 3 hours. Congratulations Virgin Atlantic. To be fair though, they did put us up in a hotel overnight - an Isis just outside the new Wembley stadium. I have to say it looks amazing. Obviously the stadium, not Wembley - that's still a **** hole. Actually, I really started the journey with a racist minicab driver (aren't ...

... we took the piglet back to its mum who fed it straight away, we were happy that his mum was taking interesting in him again and left him there - he was much happier. But Uisca wanted her pig back, when we tried to explain that he was better with his mum and that we could still come visit she went mental - ran off to her dad and said that those horrid girls wouldnt let her have HER pig back. We ignored her, and he backed us up. Later that day she came to T and said ...

at long last....

... about a 10 minute walk away from the school so we walk through Diep River, where most people know our faces and many know who we are, where we come from, what we are doing in the community, etc. We spend much of the ten minute walk answering the people who greet us- either "Hi Auntie Melody or Miss, Miss!" from the kids and "hello whities" from the men! No matter how often we hear it we still find being greeted that way quite comical! Once at the school we ...

Cape Town - Arrival in South Africa

... in the sun. Oudtshoorn is known as ostrich country...there are around 200 ostrich farms and some of them offer tours. Although the farming of ostrich's is somewhat interesting, I guess, we made this trip for one reason...the chance to ride an ostrich. So, after our brief tour of the farm the guide gave us the option of riding these crazy looking birds. I was VERY disappointed to hear that the maximum weight ...
