This is a very nice B&B with friendly staff and everything a traveler needs. The room was clean and comfortable and although we were only there one night at the start of the tour I would gladly stay there again.

Getting there: a challenge in itself

Getting to Belize City from Santiago proved to be a challenge in itself. I found the route a travel agent offered us to be roundabout and expensive so we decided to fly to Cancun and then take a Tropic Air flight to Belize City. Our Copa flight left at 0:40 and came after a normal work day. Although it seemed to be the only flight leaving at that …

Thanks to sister Marla and brother-in-law Cory we made it to the airport in time to catch an early flight to DFW. Our original 7:00am flight was delayed and we would have missed our connection in Dallas. Luckily we got the last two seats on the 6:00 am flight, which gave us an extra hour in Dallas. We've flown through Dallas last two years on our …

... about 20-25 minutes in the distance. I wished for my windbreaker as the ride was chilly and damp. As we approached the shore the air warmed and the sun peeked through the clouds...a welcome sight! Our excursion today involves a bus ride lasting perhaps one hour more or less, a 25-minute hike through the jungle, and a tubing excursion through a cave! Our guides David Brown and Saul were a lot of fun and we named our group the ...

... it all was. We then had a half hour walk along a jungle trail to reach our starting point. I was expecting it to be some sort of foliage covered expedition, but it was (literally) a walk in the park.

During the walk, Junior explained details about the Belizean wildlife which again, was more interesting than I thought it would be. He tried to persuade a tarantula out of a hole so we could touch it (I kid you not), but despite best efforts, the rain kept it inside. One of ...

... more of a Caribbean feel once we cross the border. Belize City is another 2 hour drive and I actually recognize a couple of places along the way from a previous visit; a hand crank car ferry across the river near Xuantunich and the little town of San Ignacio where I saw an exhibit of Mayan artifacts laid out on plywood and sawhorses in an open sided arena, one guard.

I have been to Belize City ...
