... We took the walking tour of the grounds (couldn't stay for the tour of the house, which was too late in the day for us to be able to get to Memphis in time for the drive-in). I was quite taken with an enormous stand of Live Oak trees all about 200 years old. (See photos.) These are magnificent things--I don't know why the branches stay up. There is also, apparently, a pecan orchard. There are brown bags in the visitor center so that ...

She also taught us the difference between the morning libation and the evening cocktail. She served her guests frosty glasses of special "Milk Punch". A potent mix of frozen milk, rum, brandy and ...

These plantations are located a fair distance from town and the Red River was the primary mode of transportation. When the river changed its course it changed the economy of the plantations. Unlike what you see in the movies, life was not all that glamorous. These were working farms which were subject ...

... most of the time. On the road for about 5 hours except for a Starbucks and bathroom stop. Natchitoches is a very pretty town with a fascinating history. It was founded in 1714 as a French outpost on the Red River to facilitate trade with the Spanish in Mexico. The town is named after the local Native American tribe. There was a log jam during the 1830's and the Red River ...
