... bit grotty and run down and a bit poor… that does not normally put us off though so not sure what was wrong. The town was under going a fair bit of renovation and rejuvenation work and has a hell of a lot of potential as great place to visit…so perhaps in 5 years that is exactly what it will be. We went for a wander and found the amphitheatre which was like a mini coliseum in the center of town. It ...
Arles, Provence, France darrenhough74... over 1.5 million tourists each year as it is the source of a natural spring. It's wierd seeing a fast flowing river and then walking 50 metres "upstream" and there only being a trickle.. and then a bit further and no water... nothing but a big cliff straight up!
The town itself is nestled in a valley and is particularly pretty at dusk when rocks take on the colours of the sunset ...
Wait a minute, we’re not traveling to Italy until tomorrow…but we spent the day in Arles exploring Roman architecture.
The biggest site in town is the amphitheatre, or coliseum. Glimpses through different side streets pull you even closer like the hub it has always been. Huge in scale, some seating is till original and large towers give sweeping views of the ...
Starry, starry, night.
Paint your palette blue and grey.
Look out on a summer’s day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Arrived in picturesque provencal France - immortalized by the many artist’s who have lived here over the years capturing the soft light, countryside and charming towns. Arles is our destination ...
... was a stop along the way. So we headed to our track. However, the signage was confusing and we ended up going downstairs only to learn we had gone right by our track, which was upstairs. We scurried onto the correct track and hopped on our train with only a couple of minutes to spare.
When we went to our reserved seats, a man was sitting in one of them. It turns out that we were on the wrong car and we had to ...
... the bus to Aix-en-Provence before announcing with glee to the two bedraggled Anglais in front of her that there is no public transport on Sunday. Undeterred we gathered our bags and headed for the TGV station where rumour had it you could hire une voiture. We arrived in a total deluge and by this point failure was not an option, we'd have willingly hired a car just to sit in it and dry-off. The French rental staff tried their best to deter us ...
Avignon, Provence, France jiewuAix en Provence We stopped here for lunch, as the bus ride today was the 2nd longest of our tour. There was little to see in Aix, and we bought some Chevre goats cheese that Amadeo recommended we get from the markets. Basically that was the highlight of this stopoff. Arrival in Avignon It's pretty here. In the evening Amadeo walked us around the Papal Palace, where Popes resided for several hundred years, and a few other old buildings. The dinner here was quite ...
Avignon, Provence, France danestern... not at work yet, and told us that our email with credit card information from 10pm the night before was not good enough! She promptly called her friends down the street and she walked us to our Hotel de l'horloge, which turned out to be beautiful, WITH a lift, wireless connectivity, spacious and clean accommodations. We walked around Avignon for a bit after lunch and checked into the hotel - and took a good long nap! That trip to Mont St. Michel ...
