... to the whim of nature’s tectonic plates. The day before the dreadful earthquake struck Nepal, BC had a 6.1 magnitude quake just north of Vancouver Island. It is apparently a regular occurrence here and kids and adults are schooled in what to do in the event of the "big one" which they have been expecting for years.

Tofino had a great feel to it, a good mixture of hippy, backpacker, weekend city visitors, locals, Vietnamese ...

  • The rest of the day was spent trying to find accommodation. We ended up in Tofino at a guest house which is like a B&b but without the breakfast. It's $110 for the night, Canadian dollars and it was just about the last vacant room in town! Tomorrow I'd like to have a look at the galleries that I saw but couldn't go into because we were on the accommodation hunt. It's a surfing place ...

    ... with them only being visible for about 2 seconds, add in a camera which takes about 1.9 seconds to take a photo then mix with a boat bobbing up and down on sea waves and you get…lucky if we even got the sea in the picture let alone the whales! Managed to get a few bits here and there though, as we stopped to watch them for quite a while.

    As we continued on we wound our way through rocky outcrops and tiny islands ...

    After a couple days in Victoria, we were off for Tofino - a tiny little town (locals told us about 1800 in population - not counting tourists!) on the West coast of Vancouver Island.
