Miners had to crawl in on their side, dig out underneath the coal seam to create a shelf, drill into the shelf, insert blasting powder, blast it, so the coal collapsed in pieces on the floor, then load it into coal cars and haul it out, using their own animals--pony, if they had a small one, goats, dogs, and their children. The goal being to hopefully find out where my Grandfather was born. Brian and I have had no luck so far in filling in the blanks about my Grandfather. So, today, we drove to Hinton.
