Historical Traveler Reviews Castello delle Quattro Torra Siena

What a view!

from Bontaks

I agree with the previous reviews - a once in a lifetime experience staying in a real castle tower with 360 degree views of the best Tuscan countryside on offer. You do need a car as it's no walk into town, but we found after a day in SIena or touring the surrounding area, it was the perfect place to retreat to and share a bottle of wine while watching the sunset. And easy enough to pop back into Siena for a great meal (once you've mastered the parking options).

Yes, the stairs are a bit tough, especially if staying in the tower itself. We decided not to take the suitcases up the final spiral staircase and just left them in the 'living area' 1st floor of the room. The bed was very comfortable and the shower had good water pressure .

The breakfasts were ok, but nothing exceptional. And I would expect the room to be serviced when paying this sort of money (we were there 4 nights and didn't have a change of towels or the bins emptied - maybe the spiral stairs put them off!)

It was a magical place to stay, very romantic and picturesque.

Amazing!!!!!! From Southern California

This is really a once in a lifetime experience. The castle is just absolutly incredible. Once you see it from the road you just can't wait and get inside.

I truly suggest getting a GPS on your trip to Italy, not only you'll find the castle easily but it surely will make your entire trip worry free. You can get a small Germin with a "europe" map card.

The breakfast every morning is O.K, nothing to write home about, but defintly enough.

Make sure you are in good shape because there will be some stairs to climb. If you are stying in the tower you will have 2 sets of spiral stairs to contend with as well. It is hard to get your luggage up to the tower. The views from the tower are amazing as you have practically 360 degrees of the most amazing views.

I highly recommend this place.

Splendida vacanza.

Luogo stupendo, quasi irreale.

Wonderful castle but forget the breakfast

from widi76

We stayed in the castello for four days. Finding it was easy with a satellite navigation system. It is really near to the city of Siena. The three rooms the castello offers are all very nice, we had the blue tower room, which was very impressive. From the bathroom we had a sensational view of Siena and surrounding areas.

The place is very expensive but nice and clean. It is a true once in a lifetime experience! There is just one thing to mention: The breakfast was a joke. Every day one crossaint and biscuits. Two choices of jam. Every day the same. No ham, no cheese, no joghurt, no fruit, no cereals, nothing else.

For the price we have paid, we expected more. There is one more thing to mention: The owner, an older lady, and her son are very nice. She speaks english, but to communicate with him you should know italian.

A true and rustic castle experience! Loved it...

My fiance` and I stayed at this castle for 3 nights and had a fantastic time. If your dream is to sleep in the tower of a castle, and wake up to views of olive groves and a beautiful rolling tuscan countryside, you will love staying here. The rooms are clean, airy, rustic and fun. We would recommend renting a car, as the bus is unreliable, and a hike in to the centre of Siena is a challenge (once you get down to the edge of the city from the castle, it's all up-hill to the centre of town). Nicola, the owner, is a perfect host. Like a few others, we got lost trying to find the castle despite priting out directions (FYI not a good idea to use map quest in this case- inaccurate). We called Nicola, and within 10 minutes he had come to pick us up on his moped to guide us to the castle. He provided us with a map of Siena, and advised us as to where to go and what to see. Be prepared to walk up quite a few winding stairwells to get up to your room, especially if you have chosen to stay in the tower room. With that said, if you have a large luggage, you should be sure to bring a smaller day-bag up to your room with the clothes you will need. We would definitely recommend that you stay here... and when you go to Piazza Del Campo (the main piazza, where all of the restaurants are), grab a bottle of red wine with a few glasses, grab a seat, and enjoy your time in this beautiful town~ you won't forget it.

Learn Italian and Get a GPS

This place was beautiful but extremely difficult to find. It is on the edge of Siena and not on maps so you need to get a car with a GPS navigator. We ended up having to get a taxi back into town just to go to dinner because we were afraid we would get lost again! Communicating with the hosts was difficult because they had very limited English. Breakfast was nice (the hosts went to a lot of effort) and the view in the morning from the "blue" room was amazing - I guess that is what we were really paying for.

One place you won't forget!

This castle is one of the most unforgettable places our family stayed in during a summer trip to Italy. It's charming, rustic, close to Siena but in the country, and the proprietors take good care of you. We were here with our 3 small children (6, 8, and 10) and they LOVED running around and playing for hours outside. They never wanted to go anywhere because they enjoyed just being outdoors and letting their imaginations run.

A few things to note--there is no a/c, so it was quite hot in the summer (fans helped). Also, we had a bat visitor one night due to leaving the windows and curtains open. They're not dangerous, mind you, but this can be a little unnerving (and, I must admit, TOTALLY memorable--we have video footage to prove it) when they're flying about your room at night! :)

Honestly, this is just a delightful place to stay. Make sure you CALL when you get into town trying to find it, otherwise you may end up driving around way too long (we did).

Once in a Lifetime Experience

from isoyhappy

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights at Quattro Torra. It was an amazing experience to stay there. We had the tower room and had views of the beautiful countryside in all directions. The room was divided in to two levels and you do have to climb up lots of stairs to get to it. The bathroom was modern and clean. How many chances do Americans get to stay in a place that is so full of history? We did have driving directions that we printed off the internet and we were able to find it. There are no signs posted. It is much easier to find in the daylight, as you are able to see it from the road. You still need to call in advance to let them know you are there. The doors were shut and no one was around when we first arrived. It is situated about 3 km outside of Siena. We awoke to a rooster crowing and church bells ringing in the distance. Laura, the woman who runs this bed and breakfast was helpful. She speaks a little bit of English. We were always able to figure out a way to communicate with her. Not a problem., Laura does have about 3 or 4 friendly cats. We loved them, but someone who had cat allergies might be miserable. We found that the best way to go for dinner was to call a taxi. It is about 20 euros round trip to and from Siena. Siena is a walled city with restrictions on cars in the inner part. The breakfast was served at a time that was prearranged with Laura. We ate in the common room which had wonderful views and an nice setting. Sometimes it was hard to find Laura or her son in order to ask a question. You are pretty much on your own. We spent a gorgeous afternoon having a picnic in the olive grove that surrounds the castle. If you go to Quattro Torra and remember that it is a bed and breakfast and not a hotel, and you will be happy. It was a great experience to stay at such a special place. One that we will never forget.

It's Complicated but Worth It

Quattro Torra really was a fairytale experience... once I found it!

Quattro Torra is a medieval castle just outside Siena with stunning views of the Tuscan countryside and Siena. The views really cannot be explained. The are absolutely gorgeous. The castle itself is a series of 4-5 apartments over 4 floors. A couple are available for renting by the week and a couple are permenant residences. All are owned/occupied by members of the same family. The pensione is on the top floor and features two oversized rooms with all the amenities.

The is nothing overly luxurious about the Quattro Torra except its rustic charm. Rooms are very comfortably furnished and feature exposed brick, beams and other medieval trappings. Bathrooms are modern.

The castle is about 5-10 minutes driving from one of Siena's primary gates and parking areas but outside the "ring-road" and truly in the countryside. For the experience, value and location, I would definitely stay hear again. The views and lanscape surrounding the castle are exactly what people expect of Tuscany and absolutely gorgeous.

A couple of words of caution... Any number of maps will not help you in locating the Quattro Torra. Get explicit driving directions as there is absolutely no signage. Otherwise, prepare to walk up at least 5 flights of stairs... so, pack a small overnight bag for your stay and leave the rest in the car. This hotel is not appropriate for those needing something more handicapped accessible.

I would definitely stay here again. The Signora was helpful with directions, etc., but you do have to go out of way to ask for assistance.

Fairytale!

If you dream of staying in an incredible castle, very close to Siena with amazing views and great hospitality, then this is the place to stay.

Located about 3 kms outside Siena, the castle is a beautiful location to stay, giving you Tuscan countyside accomodation with views of Siena, olive groves and rolling fields that are everything you hope to get when in the area.

Nicola and his family run a very relaxed operation with a nice breakfast and lovely rooms as you can see on their website - ---

We stayed in the Tower room in Oct 2004, which is at the top of the castle. The room is split in two levels with a lounge area and bathroom on the first level and a double bedroom upstairs with windows giving a 360 degree view. The sight of the surrounding area at sunrise, with Siena in the distance, is worth the room-rate on it's own.

This is added to by the very friendly attitude of the owners - Nicola, his wife and their new-born gave us a lift in to Siena and even sent us an e-mail last Christmas.

As I mentioned, it is only 3km outside Siena and a taxi in to or out of the town should be no more than 10 euros. At about 140 euros a night, if your budget is large, then it is a bargain. If your budget is smaller, then it's worth a once-off treat. The Marriotts, Sheratons etc of this world might be more luxurious, but fade away in oblivion when you first open your eyes to the world surrounding Il castello delle Quattro Torra.
