Historical Traveler Reviews Cascadas de Merida
Relaxing and Hospitable
We had a fantastic time at Cascadas de Merida! Our hosts Ellyne and Chucho, along with their great staff, really made our trip memorable. Don't be fooled by the plain and unassuming exterior, inside the front doors awaits a truly beautiful oasis. When the weather got to be too hot or the city too overwhelming, we were always able to return to this relaxing b&b where a beautiful pool, comfortable hammocks, air-conditioned rooms, and cold drinks awaited. The whole b&b was so gorgeous and welcoming. The breakfasts were also fantastic -- we didn't need lunch once the whole week we were there!
Thank you for a great time!

Splendid B & B experience
Interior courtyard with pool, small palms and hammocks
Museum qulity murals and textiles on the wall
In Cascadas' central location, you'd expect to hear traffic and street noise. Instead the B & B is awesomely quiet, a tranquil retreat after the dust and heat of visiting archaeological sites and climbing pyramids
Oasis in the city
A real surprise in the heart of this beautiful city. Close enough to walk to the central district, which is alive and vibrant. The environment created at this B & B will give you a relaxing, friendly welcome and the pool area is a place to "knock off the dust" of travel from the most arduous journey. The pool is a sanctuary from the city and the room, decor, furnishings and very private glass walled shower will nourish your stay. The owners are genuine inn-keepers, assuring your stay is wonderful. Make certain to get Chucho to play his father's most recent musical compositions. We listen to these almost every opportunity to relax and remind us of CASCADAS de MERIDA. Thanks to Ellyne and Chucho for having us. Steve & Monica
Will definately return to Cascadas de Merida ~
Having just spent a week at Cascadas de Merida, I know I will stay there again. Close to the historic central district, it is an easy walk or a quick taxi ride back to CdM. Ellyne and her staff are the absolute best, and easily make your stay perfection. The pool area is so beautiful and relaxing, it was very easy to spend one of my days in Merida just lounging by the pool with a book, and I did not regret it for a minute, it easily competes with the local attractions. The breakfasts are fantastic, and a pleasant social time as well. Easy to achieve seclusion and privacy, or get into the middle of things and chat and laugh. I believe Cascadas de Merida is a fantastic deal for the cost, a great location, and another spot in Merida, not to miss.
Thanks again Ellyne and Miguel for a fantastic and restorative vacation!

Fabulous Place, Wonderful People
What a lovely place to stay while in the beautiful city of Merida! Others have fully described the rooms and facilities -- all is true. I loved sleeping with all the windows open, listening to the birds and the early morning church bells from the cathedral in Santiago park. Ellyne & Chucho were wonderful hosts, and took very good care of myself and my friend. I'm considering moving to Merida in a few years and both gave me a lot of advice about real estate, life style, etc. and connected me with a realtor. And the breakfasts -- wow, I loved every bite, especially the coconut yogurt. I plan to go back this fall to do more house hunting and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.
Truly a Gem in Merida's Crown!!
Cascadas de Merida is a relatively new - being open for little more than a year - B & B in the heart of
"old town" Merida and within easy walking distance of the central Plaza, the oldest Cathedral in North America,
and plentiful shops and restaurants. Four Casitas - comfortable beds, spacious and very tastefully decorated - surrounding a central courtyard with inviting waterfalls, pool and hammocks create a tranquil and peaceful hideaway.
Ellyne (from the States) and Chucho Bastos (a native Meridian)- warm, engaging and helpful hosts - have come home to Merida and created from
scratch this lovely B & B complete with their own rooftop apartment over the main living, dining and kitchen area of the establishment. Chucho - have him tell you the story/ & he's a great raconteur - was born on and grew up on the original property!
A scrumptous Breakfast and fresh seasonal juice plus freshly brewed coffee and/or tea is a great way to start the day before heading off to explore the charming colonial city of Merida or nearby Mayan ruins. I will definitely return to Cascadas de Merida!
Best in Mexico
As soon as we were greeted by the owners Ellyne and Wilberth (Chucho) we knew we'd found heaven here. Ellyne went to fetch fresh melon juice as we lay on the hammocks by the pool. Rooms were spacious, comfortable and very modern with a fantastic shower and beautiful water features all around the room. Even better in the beautifully designed and decorated lounge area there were comfy sofas, guidebooks and guitars to strum. Ellyne and Chucho gave us so much helpful information and were a pleasure to chat to. They also made great breakfasts (Chucho's mother's recipe for beans were the best we tasted!) . We couldn't imagine better hosts! The place is convenient with just a ten minute walk to town and after a day's walking it was perfect to come back and relax by the pool. Of all the places we stayed in Mexico (we stayed in a range from B & B's to luxury boutique hotels across the country) this was the most comfortable stay and warm welcome, and certainly the friendliest. Will definitely be going back. P.s. thanks for your advice on buying hammocks Ellyne we bought a couple of beauties! Marco & Galya, London
Definately Going Back
My husband and I stayed at Cascades de Merida a magnificent bed and breakfast in the center of the city, great location, close to shopping, cultural events and great restaurants.
Rooms are spacious, atmosphere and decor fantastic. The garden is tranquil and peaceful with a beautiful huge pool. The breakfast was scrumptious.
Ellyne and Wilberth (Chuchu) the owners and their staff make you feel very welcome and are very helpful and knowledgeable. They have many suggestions for tours, restaurants, etc.
Ellyne is an American and Chuchu is originally from Merida. This unique bed and breakfast was originally his grandfathers house that he lovingly restored.
We definately will be going back.
Wonderful base for exploring Merida
We originally decided on this four-room B&B because of the high-speed internet access, but would return for any one of its many other amenities. The rooms were spacious, clean, and open, taking advantage of Yucatan's beautiful winter climate. The central coutyard has a pool and traditional hammocs for recharging after forays into the bustling zocolo a short walk from the house. Breakfast included a variety of seasonal fruits, local pastries, fresh juice, and regional dishes. Owner Ellyne Basto, who runs the B&B with a two-person staff, was a delight to meet. She was eager to find ways to make our stay in Merida more enjoyable, whether by adjusting menus, recommending and arranging for outings around Merida and to the surrounding Mayan ruins, or arranging for laundry with local businesses. Having someone with Ellyne's experience and engagement with Merida was a godsend.
Just what I was looking for...
From the moment we walked in we knew we had found what we were looking for. The casitas at the Cascadas de Mérida are just perfect. It fulfilled the three criteria: location, comfort and hospitality.
Its just five blocks from the zócalo, the rooms were fabulous (I wanted to sleep in the bathroom!) and you just felt like you were visiting family. The staff is so kind and welcoming, we are sure to return here should the opportunity present itself. Go see for yourself at cascadasdemerida
