One for the road at Huancayo

Yo, well after a mammoth bus journey from Lima to Huancayo, some 298 km, which took 9hours 15 mins, I landed in my guesthouse at Hunacayo at 1am. I´d already mailed them that i´d be a late arrival so thankfully there was someone still up. And I collapsed into bed. But was up at about 8.30 all the same and after a nice bfast where I met up with 2 Danes and and an English girl (see I´m not a xenophobe!!), with the travel advice and map from our friendly guesthouse owner, we set off on a 3 hr tr...

Go to San Ignacio! (but have some $ for tours)

... cannot fully use his arm, so he washes cars to make a bit of money to live by. I tipped him 2.50BZD which in hindsight could have been too much, but I guess he needed it.

John immediately got up from his chair at the corner of his green tile porch and greeted the man I had been following. I was shown a small room, completely white except for the wooden dresser—kind of looked like a sterile hospital room but I knew that many people had ...

Can you Belize this?

... it is obvious that you have left one country and entered another. For starters, everyone in Belize speaks English, with Spanish being a second language and Creole being the home language. Also the architecture of Belize is completely different to that of Guatemala’s. For the most part all the houses here are made of colorfully painted wood.

We checked into our hotel, which is slightly away from the center of town and somehow got into a conversation with one of the other ...

Cornerstone Family Trivia Winners!!!

Every Monday night, our local pub,
Eva’s has a trivia night which Cornerstone usually attends. This
week was no different and Sam and Erika and I teamed up on team
called “Fat Kids Are Harder to Kidnap”. Each player pays $2 and
the winning team keeps the cash. This week, Eva’s was packed with
all the travellers in the area and the prize was $60. The questions
were tough as usual but we did ...

Catching up from Palenque...

... We set our stuff down and went out for a bite to eat and shopped for "night essentials" like water, food (more like snacks) etc... When we woke up the next morning we got ready and to my surprize, how do I say this? I fell sick with an uncurable woman sickness which means I'd be overdosing on medication (midol) and be virtually paralized for the day. Was I going to let that stop us from our first time seeing the Mayan Ruins?!?!? Heck no ...

... from either the buildings or the tourists. They mount a constant guard, as both are very valuable to Belize! Most of the structures still standing (ish) today date from around 600CE, replacing the original, far older buildings. **Now, a brief disclaimer: JP gave us so much information (and I've had so much from other ...

Border Crossing Belize to Guatemala

... on the chicken bus from the zoo. Border crossings can be strange and sometimes dangerous experiences and it is always best to have at least one other person with you. Before setting out I had read another blog of a travelling couple who had completed a very similar route to myself. They retrospectively put a disclaimer in their blog that this border crossing was the last point in their trip that everything was plain sailing. I hoped that the same wouldn´t apply ...

Time to experience the Jungle

... able to show his skills with a machete (I made sure I was standing a good distance behind him). The afternoon we spent down by the river in between the hammocks and paddling up the river in the canoe. It was hard to leave this jungle oasis and will make going back to backpacking hard work. I'm sure we'll be back in the future even if it's just to check out if The Great White has got his six pack and to see what's changed since our last visit.

Big Rock Falls

It took about 45 minutes to get from Green Hills to the trail head for Big Rock Falls. Very rough road on the way as always. When entering the Mountain Pine Ridge reserve, our van was stopped and we were given a survey created by a professor at UMass used to gather people's opinions of the park and asked to hand it back in on the way out. As we drove into the reserve, we could see that the forest hadn't ...
