Historical Traveler Reviews Casa de las Tias San Rafael de Escazu

Fantastic Place

from Jim-Cu

Just returned from Costa Rica and have to recommend this B&B. The hosts Pilar and Xavier were simply wonderful. Very friendly and helpful with many great recommedations. The gardens were beautiful and very well maintained. The rooms were very nice and air conditionins wasnt necessary. Would gladly stay there again!

Will make your trip!

I just found this little review site for Casa de las Tias. The only thing I can add is that all these great reviews MUST mean something. I must admit, I had a local friend from Costa Rica recommend staying there. They told me that it is not only one of the nicest in CR, but of all of Central America. I certainly was not disappointed.

Your hosts Xaviar & Pilar Vera will give you the Bed and Breakfast experience you are looking for. First timers? Look no further than this.

Beautiful grounds, great location, wonderful wooden staircase etc. We stayed in the junior suite All within walking distance of banks, grocery stores, good restaurants.

Hope you all will support them.

Should be given National Park status!

This is how bed and breakfasts are supposed to be - a wonderful charming delightful house run by a wonderful charming delightful man. Fabulous breakfasts served round the table in the lovely garden. This oasis of tranquility in busy Escazu should be given National Park status!

Beautiful, warm and welcoming

We were originally booked into Posada el Quixote but thanks to TripAdvisor found out just in time that they had dogs with "run of the house" which would have been very uncomfortable for us allergy sufferers, so we were able to change our reservations for the arrival night and last two days in Costa Rica to stay at Casa de las Tias and we were so grateful to have done so.....

Just as the title says Casa de las Tias is a beautiful, warm and welcoming B&B located at the end of a residential cul-de-sac in the well-to-do suburb of Escazu. We had a lovely room on both occasions overlooking the gardens to the back of the house. The gardens both front and back are a delight and it was a pleasure to sit on the patio on the cane wicker chairs and chat with fellow guests. When the weather's suitable, a great breakfast is presented with great care and attention by Xavier who ensures that everyone is made to feel welcome and included. Xavier says "....if you need lunch, I've failed".

The grounds, house and gardens have interesting artefacts wherever you look...... this place is a real gem and as others have said far better than I, Xavier is the perfect host par excellence with a kind word and helpful hand whenever required. No doubt about it, this is a place to keep to yourself!

The Best Bed and Breakfast near San Jose

We were so well cared for!

We've just returned from a beautiful stay at Casa de las Tias. It is a beautifully run, immaculate Bed and Breakfast. The host, Xavier, was so knowledgeable and caring to our weary group of 6 sophisticated and very picky travelers. Out of our 15 day stay in Costa Rica, Casa de las Tias was by far our favorite place (and we stayed at many nice places around the country). We wanted to end our trip feeling cared for and looked after. Xavier did this. Exhausted from a long day of travel, he greeted us on the porch at 10pm and asked after each of us. The next morning, as we were leaving at 5am for our whitewater rafting trip, Xavier had laid out towels for each of our group. Such foresight and dedication made us feel like we were family, not just guests. Aside from being beautifully landscaped, clean, and with comfy beds---what truly made this place memorable was the service. If you're looking for a safe place to stay near San Jose (only 20 mins from airport) Casa de las Tias has my recommendation bar none. There are so many nice touches about it, I can't say enough. It's a piece of homemade luxury in Costa Rica. Stay away from generic hotels, and instead share stories and get guidance from such a nice host! We were glad we did!

Warm and beautiful

Casa Tias is a rare find. It is beautiful and welcoming. The gardens are lovely, and the house is interesting and beautiful, with wonderful wood and an old world feel. The hosts are charming and very helpful. This is a good base to explore local areas, and transportation for such trips can be arranged. I've started and ended my last two trips to Costa Rico here. It helps me unwind when I arrive and get prepared for the return home at the end of my vacation.

Loved the B&B

This is an excellent Bed & Breakfast. The place is charming and the owners are so helpful with anything you need. We have stayed there three times and will definitely go there again.

A Costa Rican Gem

from anonymous

A great place to stay either to explore the area with day trips or to prepare for a longer journey. Lovely rooms, convenient and beautiful setting, fine food, and, most impressive, really an exceptional couple: Pilar and Xavier, bright, well-informed, very, very helpful, and completely bilingual in English and Spanish. We were fortunate to stumble into their place on our first trip down to Costa Rica and have made a point to begin and end each of our three successive trips there with them.

Enchanting

We stayed at Casa de las Tias the first and last night of our honeymoon in Costa Rica. We were delighted with the beautiful house, the wonderful rooms, and above all the exceptional hospitality. The owners are extremely helpful in arranging anything you need and giving advice on where to go and what to buy. Plus, breakfast in the morning was delicious and served in the back garden which is beautiful. We highly recommend staying here!

A slice of Paradise in San Jose, Costa Rica!

from anonymous

I have stayed at Casa de las Tias at least 4-5 times (I've lost count) and sent numerous friends to stay there - the result is always the same - everyone loves it! The owners, Pilar and Xavier Vela are wonderful, friendly, helpful hosts who speak perfect English (as well as Spanish, of course) and will make any arrangements you need them to make for you (drivers, reservations, etc.). Their B&B is located in the upscale suburb of Escazu at the end of a lane and it is like a little slice of the garden of Eden in the city. They have beautiful gardens, a wonderful front veranda on which you can sit and relax (we had a very special Christmas morning there with friends one year), a lovely back patio on which you are sometines served breakfast. They can accommodate special dietary needs such as vegetarian and their food is always delicicous. They have rooms for couples, singles, twin beds, and families. What I especially love is that you really feel like you are in Costa Rica, not in some sterile, generic hotel room, and yet you have all the comforts you need. They are walking distance to great restaurants, shops, banks, etc. I cannot say enough about them. Let it suffice to say that I travel a lot all over the world, but I always make sure to go to Costa Rica and Casa de las Tias every year!

We decided to catch the 10.30 boat back to La Pavona. We took our cases up to the landing stage at 10 and while Wally was buying the tickets I noticed there was a boat already full of passengers and when I asked was directed to another boat. We saw Anna & Fred in the first boat (they hadn't made the early one), and it left about 10.10. We sat …

Last day. We went this morning to the oxcart festival which is held each year. We couldn't believe how many there were. Some of them had gone when we got there, but we must have seen about 100 - two oxen pulling elaborately decorated carts. They are still used a lot and they take great pride in their team. Xavier said that in Drake Bay, where you …
