Off to Umbria

December 7, 2009

Didn't know what to expect of Perugia, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. It actually have a very medieval feel to it. It sits atop a mountain and I can see why it was originally located here as one gets a very beautiful view of the valley below….and any wandering mauraders! Italy is on a 4 day holiday since the Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday. The ...

On To Umbria, And The Very Spiritual Assisi

... On the way to our hotel room, we stopped into a final church – the Chiesa di San Rufino – and toured its interior, as well as its exhibit on Pope John Paul II. This chiesa was unique in that it had huge glass panels built into the floor that showed more Roman ruins – as well as the remains of several ancient crypts – underneath the cathedral floor. The church nave also contained beautifully carved statues of Saints Francis and Chiara.

Back to Italy

Back to the land of pay toilets. Don.t know why that bothers me so much but it does. It just doesn.t seem right. Anyway, we are now in Assisi. We got off the boat and it was raining, and then we had to take a detour to Assisi. the road was very narrow and hilly, It was a little tense for awhile. Saw St Francis ...

Next we decided to explore the surrounding village before entering the crowds above. Perugia is a beautiful midieval village and very well preserved. Incorporated into this ancient setting are some very modern things like an underground moving walkway, taking you through the mazez below the pallazo. On this day, there were special booths set up for children and chocolate vendors.

Cioccolato

... pizzeria where I had delicious lasagna. After lunch we browsed through the many stands. Sample after sample led to some major purchases. It was hard to pass up the various chocolate products when the smell just filled the air. There was everything from chocolate beer to chocolate “pills” to chocolate pasta!!

Heaven.

I’ll update you soon,

anticipation!

... My friend has a nice, sparsely decorated flat in the heart of the village. We settled in and then went to the neighboring town of Amelia for a nice dinner.

Licia had worked in that region for a few months and had been recommended to a good restaurant near Amelia. We drove over the rolling hills to the small hilltop village ...

The Green Heart of Italy

(Steve)
After saying goodbye to the splendour of the seas, we made our way to the Venice train station and boarded the next train to Perugia. Known as the 'green heart' of Italy, Perugia reminded us a lot of Tuscany but greener. We were staying in a farmhouse so we had to catch a bus out of the city and after finding a few helpful locals we were pointed down a long dirt road.
Our first day at the hostel was spent lazing around ...

Just a little bit of chocolate!

After seeing most of what Florence has to offer we decided to head back to Perugia our original stop six days ago and see if we could actually get further than the train station.

With our 11 o'clock departing on time for a change we were soon headed out of Toscana and into the rolling hills, jagged mountains, swathes of olive orchards and ancient stone buildings that make up Umbria.

The scenery on the train ride down (although we had ...

... GUBBIO Jana and I left Frankfurt at 7AM. Although the sun was peeking out from the vanishing clouds, the weather was unusually cold for this time of year. We allotted ourselves plenty of time to travel to Frankfurt Hahn International Airport. As soon as we reached the airport, I was struck by a comforting sense of familiarity. It was here two years earlier that we had arrived to visit our group of friends in Bonn. One of our good friends from Bonn, Christina, was to meet up ...

27th May Drive Assisi to Gubbio

... built the extra dwellings to supplement the old castle. That's my romantic slant on the history of Gubbio anyway. From the top of the mountain, I was able to see that it was joined to the rest of the mountain range in the northeast, by a narrow piece of land, and beyond were some clearings and relatively undulating country. I guess this was where we were planning on our "ring" walk. Nevermind, I had an interesting hours exploration of the summit, which it doesn't appear ...
