JESS: I woke up feeling like a new person, headache gone, energy regained. After coffee at a nearby restaurant (where we were basically forced to sit outside to breathe traffic exhaust: our boots were muddy?), we went to the ruins. It was raining lightly but we had our gear handy (unlike many other tourists who were wearing plastic rain ponchos), including Nils' special plastic camera cover. Ollantaytambo was the place where the Incas defeated the Spaniards, one of their only victories. It's ...
Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley, Peru njkenaston... dead woman´s pass..nice!) which was 4,200m before a big descent down to the 2nd camp. From the outset the climb was full on, but we set our own pace and decided that we´d leave everyone to it and just get there in our own time. For some of the trek our guide hung back with us at the back but his patience was not his greatest quality and so my words of encouragement and support were battling against his less than helpful words which were along the lines of the more you stop the ...
Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Peru skoylesr... the foundations for many of the houses date back to the age of the Incas (500 years ago). And here again there were many – especially elderly people – who still were wearing the traditional clothes. Here even the men wore colourful hats strapped around their necks, while the women wore hollow hats that could be filled with flowers. At the town square this old woman got offended, because I did not want to take her photo, and shortly thereafter this old man ...

... Apperantly, food doesn´t digest as quick in a high altitude, so it took a while before our stomachs were less full. During the trail we passed a huge lodge with swimming pool in between the mountains... We called it Salkantay for pussy´s. ;-) With a tent it is more real and another experience. We also saw a lot of waterfalls in between the beautiful valleys and mountainchains. After 3 hours of walking we arrived at the camping place, but as 1 hour further there would be a ...
Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Peru astridenellen... the night. We visited the large Inca agricultural site that is right in the town and is built up the side of a mountain. It was mostly used for agriculture, which is known by the terraces along the mountain-side where they grew corn and potatoes. What was also interesting about this site is that it wasn’t ever finished by the Incas before the Spanish invaded, so there are huge slabs of rock that the Incas carried from a quarry about 4 kms away and up the side of the ...
Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru thenahms... finally Machu Picchu, first. Why?? Tourists. Plain and simple. The ones who don't trek arrive by the bus load. In short they rubbish up the photos. And we had come a long way for this moment. We had a plan, which we executed to a tee.
We got up at 3.30am and packed our gear. We had a quick breakie and walked the 10 minutes to the final check point. It was 4.15am and we were second group in line. Good work. The first check point opens at 5.30am, so we ...
... 2 medics caught up with me and asked if I was ok, I gave a very quick response "NO", by now I didn't know if I was going to be sick, pass out or cramp over in pain. I explained how I was feeling and Ben pulled some anti-sickness tablets out of his bag, "these should help" he said. I knew that I had to get to the sun gate so I moved on, slowly but too fast for Ruth's liking, she kept telling me to slow down, I should have listened, the next thing I know is that I ...
Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Peru jamjam... in the air. It felt as if we were entering into heaven, due to the ruins behind him having numerous steps leading waaaay up to the sky. The sky was pure white in colour with numerous clouds that looked like cotton balls. It felt like a magical moment!
My first impression of the Ollantaytambo ruins were that they were absolutely breathtaking along with the mountains surrounding them. They were made out ...
... eats and plans on avoiding food like salad while she was in Peru. I really thought she was overreacting. However, because of all her talk, I started to get paranoid too. I stopped eating the salad and focused on the rest of the plate instead. After having my seconds and thirds, we all got a move on and hopped back on to the minibus which took us to our next stop which was the town of Ollantaytambo.
If I knew beforehand what a quaint and beautiful town it ...
