Diocletian's Ear, named by Caravaggio for its shape and auditory characteristics is a man-excavated cave said to have played host to Diocletian's political prisoners during the 4th century BC. Another of these "caves" excavated nearly 2500 years ago was, due to its advantageous length and humidity, used as a rope-making factory up until the widespread adoption of synthetic rope in the 1950's.
