Located along the northeastern side of Sicily on the Ionian Sea, it's know as the 'essence of Sicily' and was built in the 3rd century BC.

Five of us departed the ship by tender and boarded a bus for Taormina. Walking into the old city through stone arches we were enraptured with its beauty. The cobblestone streets, small local restaurants and boutiques, breathtaking sea views, abundant flowers and flowering trees just ...

... The amphitheatre is in a very good state of preservation and is still in use to this day. The panoramic views from here of Taormina, the bays and surrounding villages are spectacular.

First stop was a small chapel right where the 1976 lava flow ...

... town. It's situated on a hillside about 5 minutes driving from the hotel and the hotel had a free shuttle that left every hour or so. The town is really a 1KM strip of brick road that has all the shopping stores, restaurants and some hotels. It has a nice square with cathedral and fountains that also gives a great viewpoint of the water and what is below you. There is an entrance and exit to the city that is about a 30 foot high gate and that is ...

... to visit two of the Aeolian Islands - Lipari and Vulcono. Our friend Rosa initially advised us on visiting and which we had certainly wanted to include. A package bus trip tour noted in our accomodation included the two neighbouring islands ... a deal which we took up.

The bus journing yet again took us along the scenic yet winding rode down to sea level. A wee' snooze later (OK am old now & need nanna naps) and we ...
