Oh our aching heads
UURRGGHH. We didn't get out of bed until 11am. Big fat headache, hungover and Pete had a spew. Ha, ha – very rarely happens to him. When we finally crawled out of bed through necessity of having to do something we headed to the Pirates for our ham & cheese pastry and a cappuccino to get us kick started. We then purchased our train tickets …
Cheers to new found friends!
It is pretty damn chilly here. The days are probably around 16 degrees and the nights would hover around 10 degrees. We have a lovely doona on the very comfortable bed and with the cold mornings, we really don't want to get up!
Today we decided to hike to Riomaggiore through Corniglia and Manarola. We bought the one day Cinque Terre card …
Cinque Terre
Hi Folks, We spent the last 36 hours in the Cinque Terre--a rugged and rustic portion of the Italian Riviera. We stayed in Vernazza in a room built by a local stone mason and managed by his American girlfriend. It was a great little place tucked between tiny hillside gardens and small groves of lemon and orange trees (see photos). The five towns …

We’re still in the process of adjusting to the time zone so we’re still waking up any where between 2 to 4am. Paul uses that time to get a head start on his meditations and I just catch up on my reading and writing.
On our first morning we went down to one of the restaurants that serve the B&B breakfast. Capucchinos just have an intoxicating aroma and flavor when ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Camere Giuliano Vernazza
Giuliano's Place, simply awesome!!
Staying in Vernazza at Giuliano's place was the highlight of our trip to Italy, we had a rotten time in Rome with our luggage still in Paris, so after that terrible mess, we headed to Vernazza for a 1 night stay maybe 2, as soon as we met Giuliano we felt right at home, so much that we decided to stay for 3 more nights!!!! My 2 teen girls love the village, and we just love Guliano's place, he has spectacular view, nice clean rooms and by the way, the best bathrooms in Italy! We are returning next summer for a whole 3 weeks, can't hardly wait. Giuliano is a very warm person, with a heart of gold.
Ciao,
Elizabeth.
Wonderful experience in Vernazza
We just got back from our trip to Italy. We spent 2 nights in Vernazza and had a wonderful experience. As it says in the other reviews, Guiliano is very accomodating and friendly. We had our own little cottage with a bathroom that had it's own rooftop balcony with a spectacular view of the town. The room was very quaint and gave us a unique lodging experience. We had a great time in Vernazza and are so thankful for Guiliano's hospitality! Thanks again Guiliano we hope to come back someday!
We were SO disappointed!!
Just a warning to let you know how completely disappointed and upset we were about Giuliano Basso, regarding our stay with him.
I made reservations with Giuliano before our Honeymoon trip to Vernazza, after having read on this site and others, about how great his rooms were.
A month before our trip, I emailed requesting two nights; he emailed back letting us know it was available. I then re-confirmed with him the day before we left for Europe - he returned the email, asking me to call his cell phone the day before our arrival. As requested, I tried to call (many times) the day prior to our arrival in Vernazza, but he never answered the phone.
Just before boarding the train to Vernazza on the day our of our reservations, I was finally able to get hold of him - and he told me that since he hadn't received a call from me, he had given our room away. (He also let it slip that he had been in Florence the day before our reservation and didn't answer his cell phone.)
We ended up in Vernazza that evening (again, on our HONEYMOON) without a place to stay. We finally were able to find a room, behind the "Pesceteria" (which was terribly noisy - starting at 5:30am) where we stuck out our two nights in Vernazza.
Needless to say, we were completely disappointed and angry at this situation, especially since I had done SO much research regarding his place... and it was such a special occasion. I had been looking forward to our last few days of our Honeymoon in Vernazza for months and it was a complete let down.
If you ever decide to stay with Giuliano - better think twice.
Best deal in Vernazza
If you stay is Vernazza you must stay with Giuliano. Its just that simple. Its probably the most modern abode in town and you cant beat the price. You walk out your door and you are the the middle of a hillside wine vinyard, you have a spectacular view of the Mediterranian Sea and a beautiful terrace. Giuliano is a terrific guy and is there every morning to greet you. My girlfriend and I stayed there for 3 nights and was truly the highlight of our 5 week Europe trip. Giuliano, get ready buddy, cause we'll be back soon!!
Vernazza Done Right!
We stayed two nights in one of Giuliano's rooms which overlooked the village center around the harbor. It was immaculately clean. Giuliano was a most accommodating host and also runs a terrific restaurant, Ristorante Vulnetia. Thanks, Giuliano!
The best part of our italy tour
Giuliano met us at the station and assisted us with our bags. The room was spotless, giuliano was a fantastic host! my boyfriend and I spent the best 3 days in Vernazza and the fab accomodation added to this, the lovely views and terrace were amazing!
Giuliano is the best!
Unfortunately we only had one night in Vernazza. But this one night was the highlight of a 2 week trip to Italy! Giuliano was wonderful. We loved our 2 rooms, they were modern yet had a "cabin" feel and the view was spectacular. I hope to stay for a more extended period of time some day. Be prepared for the uphill hike though and don't bring too much luggage! Even though we did bring too much, Giuliano helped us a lot and refused a tip, and the hike was worth the view! Eat at Gianni's, he's great too!
You'll see this view in your dreams...
Not only is Giuliano wonderful, but his rooms are spacious, comfortable, and convienient- and the view is AMAZING!! Vernazza really is the perfect seaside villiage, and you can't find a better place to stay than Giuliano's. One morning when we woke up Giuliano wasn't around, but his mother was there to greet us warmly! She didn't speak a word of English, and we hardly speak any Italian, but we had a *wonderful* conversation anyway!! She described that Giuliano's house used to be hers and her husbands, and that the room we stayed in was the kitchen, and that when her husband died she gave the place to Giuliano, who at that moment was in the market in La Spezia. I got all that with hand guestures and a high school Spanish education!
This was my second time to Italy, and although I had a wonderful stay at Mar Mar rooms in Riomaggiore on my first visit, Camere Giuliano will always be what I think of when I think of the Cinque Terre.
Simply Amazing
Spent three nights at Giuliano's place. It was the best part of our three week Europe trip! He probably has the most modern rooms in the whole town! Very nice and friendly as well. Vernazza is a great town too. Thanks Giuliano!
Giuliano Basso's rooms were wonderful!
We stayed in Giuliano Basso's rooms on two separate occasions during our month in Italy this summer, and we couldn't have picked a nicer place. My husband and I had a double that was very beautiful, clean, reasonably priced, and a pleasant walk to everything you'd want to see in Vernazza. Later I returned with my daughter and niece to an equally wonderful, two-room triple. Giuliano, who also runs Il Vulnetio restaurant on the harbor, was friendly and helpful. The rooms opened out onto a lovely terrace with a table and chairs, and an upper terrace had comfortable sling chairs to sit in. The rooms are back from the harbor a ways, but in addition to the water and the town, you also had a view of the beautiful terraced hillsides rising behind the town. Although the lodgings were above the train track, we soon got used to the sound of the trains. This was a terrific place to stay. I would go back there in an instant!
