... great relief we were back on I89, headed for Woodstock, Vermont. No, not THE Woodstock, (which was in NY State but not at Woodstock, even though there is a Woodstock in NY State where Bob Dillon et al actually recorded).

By the time we left the highway it was dark, we could tell though by the magnificent homes, barns and outbuildings that we were passing that this was the 'Vermont' we were looking forward to seeing. Big red barns with white trim, large ...

Today was a good day exploring Vermont. We saw lots of great covered bridges. Designed like this to stop the bridges getting icy and also to preserve their longevity. We stopped at the Bridge of Flowers, saw glacial potholes, iconic white churches and generally some beautiful driving. No festival in Woodstock but enjoying the tranquil town! Next stop New ...

I was able to take a few photos of Bethel as the train passed through on its way south. Basically, we followed the White River, then the Connecticut River for quite a long way heading in a southerly direction. Just out of Springfield MA, the train stops and the conductors have to ...

It was decided that on Saturday morning we would go to the Sugar House for traditional pancakes for breakfast. (The Sugar House is a Bethel institution - it's an old, rustic cafe that serves breakfast all day and its pancakes are legendary). Ian took Jesse over to his grandparents' house first to help move the wooden outdoor furniture inside - winter is coming and the furniture needs to go into the barn for the winter. Once they returned we ...

      Friday tourists: Rochester and Burlington

Today Lin took another day off from school to show us more of Vermont. We headed west over to Rochester first so that we could meet Lin's sister Sue. It was lovely to meet her and now we have met the whole family except for her brother Paul from Florida. We then drove north through the Granville Gulf to again join Interstate 89 to Burlington. The Gulf is the American name for a river valley or a ravine. Burlington is on the shores of ...
