First thing this morning we looked out the window and saw some really different looking birds...good sized black birds with bright yellow heads and breasts. It was fall 1992, my first quarter in the graduate program in nutrition at UC Davis. I was, like all the other newbies, enrolled in the required "how to be a graduate student" course. The instructor was a lovely man who explained how the program worked, what the oral exams were like (and crucial hint: how to choose your orals committee), and other necessary information.
