... a farmer's market still continues and we were able to pick up fresh produce. Lots of shops line the square, and some members of our group found it necessary to sample ice-cream.

Trail Days did weird things to the distribution of hikers on the trail. People scurried to the nearest town to grab rides to Damascus; some did big miles to get to the next town in time, while others, like me and the people I was hiking with, hit a town and stopped so we wouldn't be too far past it. So you ended up with big hiker bubbles around a lot of the towns within a couple hundred miles of Damascus, and Pearisburg had probably the largest. AWOL, the guy who wrote the guidebook ...

... only a couple miles outside of Atkins and waited for the storm to hit. Another hiker was already there in her tent (I never actually saw her, but she coughed once and I could tell it was a female) and another hiker I knew, Soda, came up and threw his tent down too.
