... but they must be insane to even consider it. Once we left El Capitan and drove into Yosemite Village itself, the spectacular views surrounded us in every direction. The other most recognizable image from Yosemite is Half Dome - another huge granite outcrop which looks like it was once a dome that was cut down the middle. It overlooks the canyon and is a spectacular sight - such an iconic image, absolutely stunning to see in reality. ...

... would take us up to the Vernal Falls, a 1.5 mile steep hike from the valley floor. From here, we could continue the 2.5 miles to the top of the Nevada Falls, the views from which were rumoured to be incredible, and then follow the scenic 4.5 mile John Muir trail back to the valley floor. 8.5 miles? No problem.

... but finally understood the layout of the valleys.

Real bonus in seeing James TR, he works here when not guiding High Sierra walks andc was s tarting an astronomy session. Ruth and James have developed real hero worship- "Always worth listening to every word he says." (James) and "I reaaaally like James." (Ruth).

Ridiculously late we set off for John Muir Lodge in Kings Canyon/ Sequoia. Arrived 2345. Shattered but the sunset was worth it.

... down and snapped it up. Before long we had several jays grabbing almonds as soon as they were out of our hands. One almost took one right out of John's hand. We felt a little guilty because there were signs all over saying "Nature Rules. Want to help animals? Don't feed them." At least we weren't feeding them junk food.
