Cool place, right across the street from the cemetery. Great breakfast with a real retired Marshall. (kinda short though) Not much going on since it is a month before the season starts

... Hasty Lake Campground and were delighted to learn there was water in the lake, especially since our site was on the edge of the lake. I must admit to being slightly disappointed that we weren't going to get to enjoy the large body of water we had envisioned. Hasty Lake is on the backside of the dam. It's small and low, but the ranger told us they had a good storm last week. Wendell and I had seen evidence of that during our morning walk - about 1.5 miles around the edge of ...

... the destination of the long horn cattle drives from Texas. That's how it became a cowboy town. The Santa Fe Trail went by here and later the railroad. Quite an interesting history, more than you see on the TV show Gunsmoke. That evening we went to the dinner and show at Boot Hill. The show was in the Longhorn Saloon. The food was very good and the show was good. It was reminiscent of Branson. And of course they had the requisite shoot out in the street between the Marshall and the ...

Dodge City is a small town with its claim to fame being the legend of Wyatt Earp and wild west shoot - outs. They even have a re-enactment every night in the mocked up wild west Boot Hill area. We arrived in one piece at a less than ...

... was when I noticed we were running paralell to train tracks, and even more excitingly, there was a train on the way! This time I managed to get the camera in time and took a couple of photos of it, it wasn't quite as long as the one that woke us up in Branson but was pretty impressive nonetheless.

The rest of the journey was much more of the same, huge farms with rolling plains, tall silos and little windmills. We arrived in Dodge City ...

... Well I'm at the history lesson, let me point out that if we had undertaken this trip during the early 1800's we would still be in Mexico! Yes, all the travelling we've done since re-entering the US in California up to today was part of Mexico before the above mentioned war.
After our break we're back on the road and cross into Oklahoma (our 20th state) and decide to stop at a welcome centre to eat lunch. However, the one picnic table is in use so we move on. ...
