      ... my concerns, Catia was a very good driver. Our new tour member was called Romeo and we became slightly concerned about him when we arrived in Positano. He didn't look so good and had to ask where we were. He was quite shaky and said that he'd only had 3 hours sleep so had drunk 5 cups of coffee already.       ... Headed for the hop on hop off sightseeing bus parked conveniently at the port. What could be simpler? Well, out of nowhere a well dressed elderly gent appeared. He advised me that the bus was a rip off and that for just one euro I could get a ticket on the funicular that chugged its way up to the castle on the hill. From there I would enjoy fabulous views.       ... for 7 euro, and then I hit another stumbling block, having used all my cash to pay for the hostel, the shop did not take cards, so I had to go back out into the street and get cash out. I managed to do this safely and then headed back to the safety of the hostel. By the time I got back from the shopping expedition the cleaning crew had been and the streets looked a lot tidier with a massive pile of rubbish at the end of the street.       We docked at the Port for Naples which was a bit further away from the city centre than when we were there last time.Our plan (Graeme, Richard, Wendy and me) was to get on a train to Pompeii and then another train to Sorrento but we were approached at the gates by a taxi driver and it all seemed to easy from there.       ... process - parts of Pompeii are still closed for excavation and it's said that only 25% of Herculaneum has been excavated - the rest lies beneath the town of Ercolano, which was built on top of the 20m of ash and rock that buried the ancient city.

      I ended up spending around three hours exploring Pompeii, and an additional two hours or so at Herculaneum. It really is amazing how well preserved these cities are, especially when you see the colourful frescoes ...
