The comedown

Well, what can I say about the flight? So much waiting around and generally just trying to get through it. Apart from the ****** movies and slightly weird food on Finnair, it was uneventful. Switched to Qantas at Hong Kong (after a mild blonde moment trying to figure out where to go to get my boarding pass...I didn't see the desk where I was supposed to go, because there was no queue...and I was becoming quite accustomed to queues...I nearly went ...

3rd Time Lucky

We made it back here after numerous plane trips which we can assure you were not simple or on time, but somehow we just love it here. Maybe it's the friends that we expect to see or maybe it's the cafe culture, however this time we can certainly say it's due to the great surprise of bumping into friends from KL - Choi Fan and Family. Probably the last time for a while that we'll see Marilene or ...

Wwoof-ing in Darraweit Guim near Wallan, Victoria

hello folks - well we have just finished our second ever WWOOFING experience (Willing Workers On Organic Farms). This is an exchange programme where you work on someones organic land for 4-6 hrs per day for food and accommodation - and you dont need a working visa to do it! so we stayed with a lovely lady called Anne for 5 days near Wallan, about 40mins on the train from central Melbourne. Anne spends most of her time rehabilitating kangaroos and wombats! When we walked in her ...

Melbourne

Having said a sad farewell to our trusty van which had delivered us safe and well out the Eastern end of the Great Ocean Road, we arrived in Melbourne to stay with Caroline's family. Caroline's cousin, Lek, her husband, Mike, and their two boys Henry, 6 and William 8 put us up and put up with us for 4 nights. A chance for Caroline and Lek to catch up and a time to relax and get some washing done was greatly appreciated!! Lek and ...

Heat - eat your heart out

Well, its been a long time coming but in the last week, we have doubled our cricket watch count to 4! Yes, you guessed it, we saw some more of Englands finest (well, I suppose thats not saying much but heh!) cricketers today while we were ambling around the centre of Melbourne looking for some swanky clubbing gear. Matthew Hoggard was the first to fall into Pols Celeb Radar and Pol feels that TV does not do him any favours.. he has a "rather pert bottom" and ...

Kevin Pieterson!!! - I nearly wet myself!

in Pieterson.. the high scoring English/S.African batsman.. oh, and his chum Andrew Strauss. You probably dont know what we are talking about, but give me chance, and ill try and explain. Whilst taking our daily stroll down Acland Street (in St Kilda) i was absently chuntering to myself when the Polmeister chirped up "Ooooh Ali, look who it is ...

The Croquet Pavillion

Australian women walk quickly. First Bronwyn and now Emma T. take me for morning strolls where my legs churn along at a terrific rate. Bronwyn possesses long shanks and the mental drive to leg it for hours. No real surpise there, but Emma's light, bubbly nature and petite size promised a more sedate outing. Instead, we're hoofing it along the Campaspe River path, her legs a blur beside me. Coming back through town, she points out her ...

Spa Country

I sneak out early to get a measure of the town. This turns out to be a quick exercise, as Kyneton is not a bulky place. Thrift stores outnumber traffic lights 3:2. A promising ratio. A charming lilt fills Kyneton, which I suspect may be marred soon by progress. Already there are hints of this in the slightly wrong look of the new "old-fashioned" shops and the bistros inhabiting historic bluestone (the local name for basalt) buildings. But half a block from the ...

Enter the garden state

Emma Trewella erupts from a departure lounge seat as we enter the Melbourne airport. She heard our Canadian accents coming up the ramp and has a little nostalgic high for their time in Canada, which keeps her chatting about their travels and Australia until we call it a night three and a half hours later. The drive north to Kyneton dips into small river valleys and over rolling farm country. Pine trees join the ubiquitous ...
