... abundance of marine animals usually found only in deeper ocean waters. To get a better look at some of the sea life under the water we took the additional tour of the Milford Deep Observatory. This is a floating observatory which lets you walk down below the surface of the sound and is in essence an aquarium, only here the fish look in on you. All in all a great morning on the water with plenty of awe inspiring views. If you come to New Zealand and decide, as we did, not to do the well ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand abcanaresi drove over to Milford through the fields of many many sheep and arrived just after lunch time. i went for a walk along the lake side and then to the wildlife park where they keep endangered animals such as the Takate a colourful flightless bird that is almost exstinct.
the next day the weather was terrible and cold and rainy so i sheltered for the morning and then ...
... that as it keeps growing in popularity as a tourist destination that it will turn into a country of Vail's, Santa Barbara’s, and Boca Raton’s. Honestly I think the word is only recently getting out about how great of a holiday destination it is. It seems before it was a secret kept only by its close neighbors namely Australia, Japan, and its other Pacific coast cousins. The infamous Milford Road is pretty much God’s highway ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand thehammsventure... got larger. Again plenty of dolphins and seals. We went out with Real Journeys but there are other operators and most of the people had travelled from Queenstown..
On the trip out we stopped and walked into the beech forest, the ground was about half a meter thick with moss and it was like walking on sponge (beware of logs), a native robin came down and land less than 200mm from us.
It is possible to travel all the way to Queenstown but we spent one more night in Te Anau.
... myself back into the civilized world after this, at least not yet. I don't know if I can make the transition. For one thing, it's just hard to imagine stopping, I mean here I am, having come across a continent, two islands, and about to travel across another continent, and then what, I just stop? Just like that? It doesn't seem possible. But there it is, Rochester, in my sights. I'll be there in a month or so, but here, walking through the moss-covered forests of the Fiordland, it's hard ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand sirechoJack: Attempt to use the coin slot Internet at Te Anau Great Lakes Campsite but woefully inadequate. Didn't use the coin slot Internet at the launderette as expect it's as **** at the caravan park's. Used Internet at the photoshop. Rush back to Manapouri Motorpark to pay for and get picked up for cruise. Ferried forth across lake Manapouri and chat to a nice old slightly racist couple who have come to see the power ...
Doubtful Sound, South Island, New Zealand yvetteandjack... It still didn't deter him from talking for hours on end through the mic though. The weather wasn't great. It was far less than great. At least it wasn't raining, which apparently it did for the entire day before. And heavy rain means lots of waterfalls, of which we got the full benefit of, without the rain. It was a nice journey, winding us through the mountains and trees. We saw "scars" left where there had been tree avalanches. The ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand pricklyleaf... we could feel the spray. We spent the night at Milford Lodge. Fiordland, as well as several other places, reminded us of Scotland except that everything was on a bigger scale. Higher and much steeper mountains, glaciers, rainforest and, unbelievably, even more rain. Milfors Sound has 6 to 7 metres of rain and year and rain is recorded on 200 days a year. I think Benmore records about 2.5 metres per year. One creature we haven't mentioned is the ...
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand caledonians... scandinavian sounding
woman running a pizza place, to heat us up some lasagna for dinner, so
we could run and catch our next tour to the glowworm caves.
7:00
PM - The trip started out at the Real Journey's office in Te Anau, a
block away from our hotel and town center (one street with one of
everything, and all closed by 6pm). I prepid this too, so we just
picked up ...
... lakes to keep us occupied...
...w e even saw a choo-choo train!
When we arrived in Te Anau it was still really sunny, but there was a bitter wind blowing, which made me feel rather chilly in my shorts & polo shirt!
Again the town was located next to a massive lake, which looked gorgeous in the morning sunshine.
We'd ...
