... and hills look brown and bare without much else but sandy rocks. We can see narrow dirt tracks zigzagging up into the brown hills. We suppose they're ATV roads or hunting roads. No one else in their right mind would drive up them.

We left Ventura early, drove through my old stomping grounds in the San Fernando Valley to San Bernadino and took I-15 north. It was very windy and rainy over Cajon pass. We decided to stop in the high desert of Apple Valley for a few days as we noticed the weather was in the 70s, something we had been looking forward to.
