... and road rose from a six-lane each-way highway to a winding two-lane. The oncoming traffic was heavy enough for us to wonder if today was the wrong day to go there. On the straights there were long parking areas to put chains on and a stern warning sign that carrying chains is mandatory “no exceptions” (we didn’t bring any).

... Where I'm from a park is a place you might find empty cider bottles or used condoms. They should be called national treasures or American beauty spots. The people here really do a great job looking after these places and as long as they don't discover oil, gold or fried chicken buried deep below the surface, I'm sure the Americans will continue to look after these unbelievable places for future generations to enjoy.
