... from the Old Testament. The middle apse has a huge magnificent mosaic of Christ. The interior has roman columns and the cloister garden arches and fountain are Arab inspired. The bronze door has 42 Biblical scenes. We shared caprese and stuffed meat balls (tasted like pork sausage) a Monreale specialty. Palermo food markets definitely have an Arabian feel. Breakfast was fresh squeezed blood red orange juice and fried rice balls that they call pancakes. ...

We arrived in Palermo around 6pm and it was almost dark. We quickly realised that the city is worse than Hillbrow in Johannesburg in certain areas (thanks to a road closure due to a street carnival and the GPS) and a really smart Mediterranean sea-side city only a few blocks away.

... So….we are given the ultimate choice. Die of smoke inhalation or hypothermia!

Fast forward several weeks now to mid January. Europe is experiencing (and Italy in particular) the worst winter weather in 35 years! The winds along the Sea are demanding and unpredictable. They shift and whip without warning and are hard to predict and impossible to control as they whip down our chimney into our family room.

... that would rival any Balinese street. I kept waiting for the Godfather music to start up as we walked around the streets, unfortunately the closest we got to Godfather like activity was seeing a guy go into a bar we were sitting at and collect money. Probably something very innocent, but not when you’re in Sicily.
