Okay- my idea of an "easy valley hike" is not exactly the same as the guide book. But, in fairness, it said "the easiest" on the tour, not "easy." I also must admit that I failed to read the last paragraph that described the 1200' climb at the end of the hike to get into Champex, Switzerland. It was a six hour hike, ending by walking along ...

... headed to the little restaurant and enjoyed the local specialty of potatoes with melted cheese out on the grass. (I like Swiss food!). When we were ready to get back on the trail to finish our hike for the day, we pulled out the itinerary to find the name of our hotel. Much to our surprise, we had already arrived! Wild flowers make me smile! Breakfast ended at 7:30 am and the Refugio staff ...

... everywhere they have been free, although not always really hot. Considering the weather it doesn't matter. The only worry is whether the cows will go to sleep tonight so we don't have to listen to the bloody cowbells all night. Dinner tonight was fantastic. Pumpkin soup, fresh bread, carrot salad, and slow cooked deer and mashed potato. It was similar to the steak and ale pie filling, with a bit of a gamey taste. Strawberry ice cream for ...

... the clouds soon returned with more torrential rain, we walked into them and descended the mountain in whiteout on the long downhill to the Col de Forclaz – a seemingly never ending descent, especially in the rain.
This is where the route finishes for the day in the book and the hotel does offer camping, but it was covered in cloud and we thought we may as well go down into the next valley to start tomorrow a little bit ahead. So descending once more, this time ...
