... anything interesting in town at night. Not sure if maybe the weather has people stuck inside their hotels but it was pretty dead. As we walled back to the hostel, we saw a man running carrying a baby in his arm and you could hear the baby trying to breath and sounded lime it was choking. He stopped near us and blew into its mouth, yelled over his shoulder to the lady in pursuit who yelled back to a house to call the doctor in advance as he ran off further. We just froze ...

Then, just by chance, we were walking through Santa Teresa and we passed her ...

... flight to Rio! Thanks Chris and GG for a memorable…or not…send off!

We stayed in a little Pousada (aka B n B) in Ipanema a pretty suburb on the beach with heaps of cute restaurants and ritzy tourist shops. Run by Margarida who was a 70 ish granny with a heart of gold, she just wanted to fatten you up and look after you and made you feel like you were staying at your Nans house. We had read all the advice in Lonely Planet and online about the dangers in ...

... Africans and indigenous peoples. While at first the Africans arrived as slaves to work on the plantations, the salves belatedly were liberated in 1888 - a fact that the people of Rio still feel ashamed about to this day.

We have arrived to - surprise, surprise - a bit of haze and threats of rain. :) We were advised on our trip not to drink the water from the tap as it contains many chemicals and to be careful with the taxis ...
