After another home-cooked breakfast, we set off towards Baton Rouge, driving into the hinterland, along route 44 adjacent to the Mississippi River (not visible from the road due to the high levy banks). The sultry air barely moved. The giant Live Oaks stood sentry over the path leading from the wide, brown Mississippi river to the big house. Sugar cane grew silently across the plantation, dragging nutrients from the ground and thriving in the moist, opressive air.
