After another home-cooked breakfast, we set off towards Baton Rouge, driving into the hinterland, along route 44 adjacent to the Mississippi River (not visible from the road due to the high levy banks). We passed a surprising amount of heavy industry – petroleum refineries, coal loaders and conveyor belts, and a sugar refinery. The sultry air barely moved. The giant Live Oaks stood sentry over the path leading from the wide, brown Mississippi river to the big house. Sugar cane grew silently across the plantation, dragging nutrients from the ground and thriving in the moist, opressive air.

... East and took us through some areas of very nice homes. However, there were also many open lots where houses had stood before Katrina. Basically, in many places the first two blocks from the water had been devastated. Rebuilt homes tended to be built on stilts with parking for vehicles under the house.
