Historical Traveler Reviews Barclay House Bed and Breakfast Vancouver
Perfect location and charming house
THis place is very nice, We stayed 3 nights in the "penthouse" room, and we loved it ! You can walk from the house to the main attractions.
Great value in great city
We visited in mid-March and stayed in the South Suite. I wouldn't say the visit was perfect, but I'd be surprised if there was a place in Vancouver that could give us a better location and room for only $139 Canadian. The room was quite large and had a separate sitting room and a nice bathroom. Breakfast was very good, if not exceptional B&B fare.
The location is awesome if you are wanting a good place to explore Vancouver. You are right next to the huge shopping district on Robson and can easily get to Stanley Park or Granville island by just walking, or by taking a bicycle or using public transportation (ask the innkeeper how to get to Granville via the "aqua taxi"). A real pleasure.
A stay like this makes us want to move to Vancouver ...
Words do not do justice in describing our experience. The hospitality and generosity of our hosts was above and beyond consistently. The breakfasts were scrumptious, the rooms were as comfortable as home (or more!), and the hosts were willing to go above and beyond to make our stay fun, exciting and an anniversary we will always remember. Jonquil even went as far as to bake us some goodies for the airplane ride home the afternoon we left! This is not your average stuffy bed and breakfast. But a gem in the heart of Vancouver that has attended to every detail to make your stay that much sweeter. We WILL be going back!
Know the difference
Know the difference between a Bed and Breakfast and a hotel. This is a statement not a question. We recently spent 3 wonderful days in Vancouver's West End at the Barclay House. Everything you may have read about this beautiful home is true. From the ample gourmet breakfasts to the comfortable beds, to the gracious but unobtrusive staff; this place has it all. We could go on about the fine details like the basket of fresh baked cookies and the spring water each day in our room, or even the eclectic set of CD's available. But what prompted this review was the uncalled for behavior of a pair of "guests" whose stay was rather brief. Apparently they never got over the fact that someone from the neighborhood was temporarily parked in "their place." They huffed out feeling an inexcusable sin had been committed. Lighten up folks, this is not a hotel; it's someone"s home...that's the point. Being a home in a neighborhood, occasionally folks stop by. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to park. (By the way, there were many places to park along the tree lined street) Choose your battles wisely, this place is a find! Patrick and Bruce and staff set the standard.
A Place Apart . . .
Upon returning from a delightful Alaskan cruise on the Holland America line, our destination in Vancouver for three nights was the Barclay House in the West End. It proved to be an excellent choice. We used it as our base to walk the perimenter of Stanley Park, along English Bay and over to Granville Island. It is very convenient to walk to the city and along the water as well. We appreciated the restaurant suggestions. Also, the suggestions regarding good taxis and tours. The tour bus picked us up in front of Barclay House for an all day visit to Victoria on Vancouver Island. Breakfast was presented beautifully and the taste was excellent. The staff was very friendly. The owners went out of their way to make us feel at home in their beautiful home. They let us enjoy our time there without being constantly around. Yet they were always available, if needed.
GREAT B&B AT BARCLAY HOUSE
We stayed at Barclay House in the West End this May. We couldnt believe the breakfasts. They were tasty and beautifully plated and we were treated to a new creation everyday. Chef Jonquil Parisian certainly knows what shes doing. We couldnt wait for mornings and thats saying something. It was hard getting out of the beds. I dont know what kind of beds they have at the Barclay House but they are more comfortable than any Ive experienced in other hotels/ b&bs. We felt at home here. There were a lot of times we were left to our own in the house- what a relief compared to other b&bs. Patrik and his staffs suggestions were right on the mark and they were available whenever we needed them. The hosts werent under foot like you find in many places. The front porch was perfect for sipping complimentary sherry and mingling with other guests while people watching the foot traffic down Barclay. Most people cant walk by without stopping to admire this beautiful house standing proudly between the tall apartment buildings. We loved our stay. It made the rainy days bearable. I didnt mention the guest rooms! We had to move once during our stay- staff made the move effortless. We stayed in the South and the East Suites. The suites are huge by bed and breakfast standards, large bedrooms, private sitting rooms, tv/vcr , stereos, lots of little touches and a great video library. (The bathroom has amazing shower pressure.) Extra touches include plush robes, daily filtered water, a selection of tasteful cds and books by local artists- and real shampoo that smells and feels devine. The décor is lovely. Not one bit over the top. Shades of beige, beautiful patterned carpeting, period furniture. The place has the taste and refinement of a gentlemans club not the overdone Laura Ashley we see so often. If you have trouble dragging your husband to stay at b&bs, this one will be the exception. I just thought Id do my part to recommend this beautiful place for others to enjoy.Alissa in Atlanta
What a wonderful visit!
As much as we enjoyed Vancouver, it was hard to leave the Barclay House every day. It is so beautiful and so comfortable there. We enjoyed phenominal breakfasts, the advice, and all the thoughtful touches- the water and fresh cookies, the restaurant recommendations, the cd's..... We will gladly tell all of our friends and family about the trip.
Elegance, Comfrot & Style
I have been traveling to Vancouver BC for over a decade. When I happened to have the delightful pleasure of stumbling across the most charming lodging experience I have ever encountered I could not have been more pleased. The atmosphere was plush and stylish. Stunningly cared for antiques and stylized art captivated my eyes from the time I entered and continued as I was shown about the lovely period house. Soothing jazz, and occasionally, classical music found it's way to my ears in way that put my traveling nerves at ease effortlessly. The rooms I have stayed in there have been beautifully adorned and cleaned, with almost every need anticipated. The morning meal, that is provided is without fail, delicious!!! In fact, on one occasion, I was served French toast (croissant bread pudding) with rhubarb sauce that was so good that every time I have returned I have asked for it when making my reservations. They have been happy to grant my wish and the pleasure they take in granting it has made it taste even better. The location is also a bonus. The house is located in a lovely neighbor hood with beautiful homes plenty of friendly neighbors and just blocks away from Vancouver's throbbing shoppers paradise, Robbson Street. I often Park my car in back and walk or cab everywhere. Now here is where it really gets good, the staff are so helpful in helping you find anything you need while at the same time, not underfoot. One time I thought I was the only one in the house and I couldn't find a restaurant for dinner, I rang the call buzzer not really expecting anyone to answer, with in moments Patrik was there with a list of their preferred dining locations complete with price range, style of food, location, and reservation were made in minutes. I have found, with extensive traveling, even if you are just looking for a place to sleep and change clothes, accommodations can make the difference between disaster and paradise. The Barclay House is a sure fire way to paradise. If you ar
stay there please say hello to Patrik from The Manring Family.
Cheers
A Vancouver Jewel
I have the good fortune to travel frequently between Toronto and Vancouver. The Barclay House is always my first choice. It is in the ideal location, close to Stanley Park, Robson Street, Granville Island, and English Bay. It is such a peaceful, elegant B&B, full of cosy touches, as well as modern conveniences. For me it is like a sanctuary. It is beautifully decorated without feeling stuffy or over-done. It is also very quiet. Nothing feels better than sitting on the front porch on a warm summer evening. The staff is fantastic and they always anticipate your needs. (Their selection of CDs and movies are always excellent!) The breakfasts are first-rate and Patrik, the host, always has excellent recommendations of places to eat or sites to visit around the city. I think The Barclay House is superb and I highly recommend it.
Wonderful time
I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone going to Vancouver. Location is close to downtown and Stanley Park, but still a quiet residential neighborhood. The food was outstanding, who knew breakfast could be that good. The young friendly staff just brightened the day. Make sure to check out the massage services.

Cupcakes and The Barclay House
We drove down 4th Avenue again and past The Naam. We were heading to a little shop called Cupcakes, for Chewy's birthday cake! We parked around the corner from the bakery and walked around the block. The store stood out on the street like a sore thumb. It was baby pink and tiny cupcakes adorned the windows. There were little pink chairs and tables …
