Historical Traveler Reviews Bankers Hill Manor San Diego
Almost hate to give away this secret!
If you want to read this review feel free, but let me sum it up for you now - this is an excellent place to stay in San Diego!
My wife and I stayed here for three nights and found the hosts to be personable and accommodating, and the B&B itself to be the best we have ever stayed in. In all honesty, it was significantly better than almost any hotel we have ever stayed in either. To put that last statement into perspective, we have stayed at B&Bs located in Salado (Texas), Fredericksburg (Texas), San Francisco, Napa, Colonial Williamsburg (VA), etc. On the hotel front we honeymooned at the Ritz Carlton in Paris - 'nuff said?
The B&B is large, spacious, and very well decorated. There are numerous common areas, and with only three rooms we rarely ran into other guests with the exception of breakfasts. The two outdoor terraces are large, and overlook the backyard which is a miniature oasis - landscaping was top notch.
We stayed in the Africa suite (or should I say "sweet"), and the pictures on the website do not do it justice. It had everything (OK, maybe a larger TV set would be nice...can't quite make that break from civilization). The room was well decorated, had great linens, and had a great view. The bathroom was equally large with a full oversize shower, separate large tub, and double vanities. Off the bathroom was a nice-sized sunroom. Needless to say - we had trouble leaving the room each day!
Breakfasts were grand is as to be expected in a B&B, and the hosts were flexible as to time (i.e. to accommodate late and early risers). Normally, my wife and I like to try different places when we travel, but in all honesty, I cannot imagine NOT staying here again in my travels to San Diego - it was that good.
Make sure you check it out!
My girlfriend and I decided to check out Bankers Hill Manor based on other reviews I read on this same site and we're both glad we did. We stayed in the Serenity Room which is the smallest room of the three offered at Bankers, but it was more than sufficient for us. The bathroom for this room is not attached, but there is a private bathroom down the hall that didn't hinder us in anyway. The hosts, Brian and Tim, are excellent and very easy to talk too. We most enjoyed there fancy breakfasts that would rival a five star hotel. The location of Banker's is great, its a short drive down to the waterfront, downtown or the gaslamp quarter, the San Diego Zoo, or Seaworld. We would highly recommend anyone travelling to San Diego to stay here for business or pleasure and we plan on staying there next time we go to San Diego.
Feel Special at Bankers Hill Manor (B & B)
My wife and I recently attended a national conference in San Diego and looked for an alternative to the usual conference hotels. We booked six nights at Bankers Hill Manor and loved it. The innkeepers were very pleasant and fun. They took great care to make sure that we were comfortable. The inn is incredible. The owners have carefully designed/restored it with privacy in mind. The breakfast was as upscale as the facility and we appreciated the effort in preparing such a morning feast!
The inn is conveniently located near everything and provided a real home-away-from-home for us. When I return to San Diego, I'll be at Bankers Hill Manor for sure.
One of the best Bed and Breakfasts we've ever stayed at.
This Craftsman era home was a nice change from the usual lace and doilies Victorian. The room we stayed in had wonderful views of downtown and the ocean. The area was nice for early morning walks to Balboa Park and close to many small boutiqe restaurants. We attended a convention downtown, but the drive was easy and only took 5 minutes. We felt safe and secure with the gated entry. Tim and Brian were both very pleasant to talk to and entertained us one afternoon with wine and their fabulous cookies! The hot tub was clean and private, a nice stress reliever at the end of the day. My husband and I really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the Bankers Hill Manor.
Relaxing and Very Enjoyable
We just came back from an AWESOME time staying at Bankers Hill Manor. This was the first time staying at a B&B and it will not be the last. We came early to San Diego before our convention started to enjoy the city and all the great attractions. Although we could only stay for two nights there and go to another hotel, we wanted to go back because it was so nice and the service was outstanding.
When we first arrived we pulled up to a house that was beautifully landscaped and then walked into the main entrance where we met one of our hosts. One of the main attractions to this B&B was their great location to everything. Since we did not rent a car we were able to walk to the zoo, Balboa Park, and the harbor within five minutes.
Besides having a great location, the service and hospitality were amazing. Normally at hotels you only get the basic service and the kind hello. But with our hosts, they were so kind and thoughtful. They told us the truth about where to go that was good and not good and we were also able to learn about the history of the house and them. A major bonus was that every morning we had a gourmet breakfast prepared. The room we stayed was the African Suite and it was amazing. Normally you would only have a bed and maybe some extra room but we had an extremely large bathroom with a shower and jacuzzi and a sun room where we had dinner one night.
Overall Banker Hill Manor was a outstanding place to stay and I would recommend it highly for anybody traveling in the San Diego area.
The Perfect B&B
What a wonderful find. After researching all of the hotels in the area, I decided to look into some of the B&Bs in San Diego. This one stood out from all the rest. And we were not disappointed.
From the moment we stepped foot into what would be our home-away-from-home for 5 nights, we knew we made the right decision to forego a hotel. Like other reviewers have mentioned, you can pick your breakfast time, which was very nice. Breakfast was to die for. Everything is homemade and fresh. We literally would not get hungry again until about 3:00 in the afternoon. By then you my as well eat something light because dinner was right around the corner.
We stayed in the Tropics Suite and loved it. The bed was very comfortable...and I'm pregnant, so a comfortable bed is important.
Brian and Tim were amazing hosts. Very friendly and easy going. Oh, and I can't forget Brodie(sp?). Their extremely well-behaved Gordon Setter. Loved him.
We will definitely make every effort to stay at Bankers Hill Manor again.
Highly recommend!
What a find! Bankers Hill Manor was our beautiful home for a relaxing, rejuvenating, romantic 6-day getaway. The owners, Brian and Tim, are the perfect balance of extraordinarily welcoming, accessible friendly and helpful but not intrusive. It's so refreshing to find an elegant B&B that feels like you're visiting your laid-back, cool cousins (with good taste) instead of your grandmother! We'd expect to pay 50% more for a place like this.
We stayed in the spacious Tropics Mini Suite, which is beautifully appointed, light and comfortable enough for two to hang out all day. We also saw the African Suite, which looked equally appealing, with a larger bathroom, big jacuzzi tub and separate sun room (but smaller bedroom).
Breakfast was a delcious, filling gourmet affair each morning at a time of our choosing, and varied each morning. We appreciated how graciously they accommodated our special dietary requests. Speaking of food, a jar of delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies sits just inside the front door, available 24/7.
Another important feature that set it apart for us was the generous amount of common space. Considering that there are only 3 guest rooms, the living room, dining room, gallery room, 2 decks and garden allowed us to feel like we could always have privacy, even outside of our room.
It's conveniently located in a safe neighborhood: 5 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes from the Gaslamp Quarter,& walking distance to Balboa Park & hip Hillcrest area (lots of great restaurants and fun shopping).
We're already dreaming about our next visit here!!
Forget the downtown hotels
We like the nightlife and restaurants in the gaslamp area. Great location, just 5 minutes away from downtown. After staying here, we'll probably never go back to the hotels downtown. We stayed in the "Tropics" room. Great room with tons of space. Everything was plush and relaxing. The inn keepers were very attentive and helpful. Recommeded a great little French restaurant (La Vache) with food to die for. They also served up delicious breakfasts in the morning. Fresh Starbucks coffee in the morning, great chocolate chip cookies, and bottled water/ sodas in the fridge was a nice touch. Looking forward to going back.
Great place to stay.
Stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed everything about the Manor, it's hosts and San Diego. We had the Tropics Room and it is huge, private and very clean.
Freshly ground coffee first thing in the morning then down for breakfasts that were truly special.
My mouth is watering as I recall the presentation, aromas and tastes, what a great way to start the day.
The location is hard to beat and we spent may hours walking to various points of interest all the while admiring the surroundings.
Getting onto the various freeways or downtown is easy and we were surprised how quick we could make from shopping at the outlet malls at the Mexican Border to lunch at Georges in La Jolla.
Even with four days there are way too many things to see and do but that makes it all the more fun to go back for another stay.
Wine tastings on the deck outside our room in the afternoon, fresh cookies in the cookie jar by the front door, great hosts and thoughfull amenities.
For us it was the best mini hoiday we've ever had and it really revolved around Bankers Hill Manor.
Thanks Tim and Brian we'll see you soon.

You simply MUST STAY at Bankers Hill Manor
Bankers Hill Manor in San Diego is an absolute MUST STAY B and B. The house is beautiful; a lovely Craftsman home that has been refurbished with much care and detail. The Manor keepers were warm, hospitable, friendly...and great cooks (our morning breakfasts were tasty)! Everything about our stay was relaxed and inviting; nothing forced or uncomfortable. The location is ideal, as it's in walking distance to Balboa Park and Downtown (Gas Lamp Quarter, Horton Plaza, etc). Although we were on a mini-break holiday, we would certainly recommend this location to business travelers too, as the price is cheaper than most off the hotels downtown. If you are planning a trip to San Diego for any reason, be sure to stay at Bankers Hill Manor.
